Robert Lawrence Baker

BRANDON:Robert Lawrence Baker, age 94, died Friday, December 13, 2013, at his home in Brandon.
   Mr. Baker was born in Rutland on July 6, 1919. He was the son of Loren and Carrie (Chaffee) Baker. He was a life long Brandon resident. Following his education at Brandon High School he joined the United States Army. He had served with the 7th Field Artillery Battalion. He was involved the battles of; Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Among his numerous decorations are the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and a Citation of Merit for action against the enemy in Weisman, Belgium on December 12, 1944. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Brandon where he worked at Whelden Coal from 1945 until 1967. He then joined the staff at Moore’s Business Forms where he worked until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of The American Legion.
   Surviving are 4 daughters; Patricia Baker of Middlebury, Kathy Thompson of Rutland, Linda Bunker of East Poultney and Connie Jones of Moretown, 4 sons; Donald Baker of Fairbanks Alaska, Paul Baker of Bangor, Maine, Guy Baker of Brandon and Keith Baker of Castleton, his companion, Florence McIntyre of Brandon, 2 nephews; Lawrence Baker of Pittsford and Norman Baker of North Clarendon and a niece, Gertrude Hathaway of Benson. 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Lovinna Bishop and Martha St. John and his brother George Baker.
   The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will take place in the spring, in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon.
   Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory to; Brandon American Legion Post #55, P.O. Box 25, Brandon, VT 05733.
   Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

John R. Stagg

Shoreham-John R. Stagg
John R. Stagg 49, died  on December 18, 2013 as the result of injuries sustained while working in Hartford, CT.
He was born June 10, 1964 in Middlebury the son of Rodney and Jean (Frasier) Stagg. He was a graduate of Middlebury High School class of 1982.
John worked as an Iron and construction worker and although he didn’t like to be away from his home and Zachary he loved  his work and the people he worked with. He worked for Ferguson Corp. and had also worked for Russell’s and S.W.B. construction.
He enjoyed bon fires with family and friends, hunting, fishing with his son   Zachary, Cooking and was an avid car enthusiast.
One of John’s greatest moments was when he became a father and Zachary’s well being was John’s top priority.
He is survived by his companion Tia Russell, of Shoreham, his parents Rodney and Jean Stagg of Shoreham, his son Zachary Stagg of Shoreham, his sister Patty Stockwell and husband Randy of Shoreham, and by aunts, uncles and a special cousin Bruce Briere.
A memorial service was held on Friday December 27, 2013  at the Shoreham Congregational Church. The Rev. Gary O’Gorman will officiate.
   In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Zachary Stagg Educational Fund in care of Patty Stockwell at P.O. Box 126, Bridport, VT 05734
Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Homes.

 

Darlene Jean Manning

RUTLAND:Darlene Jean Manning, age 62, of Rutland and formerly of Brandon, died Monday, December 30, 2013, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH.
    Mrs. Manning was born in Rutland on September 17, 1951. She was the daughter of Charles Joseph and Betty Jean (Waite) Sargent. She received her early education in local Rutland Schools and had attended Middlebury High School. May 23, 1969 she married Robert Sharon Manning, in Middlebury. They made their home in Brandon. Mr. Manning predeceased her on July 21, 1992. She returned to Rutland in 2004. Mrs. Manning had worked as a home care provider for several years. She enjoyed reading, puzzles and crocheting.
    Surviving is her daughter; Tina Marie Mallette of Brandon, 2 sons, James E. Manning of Clarendon and Kenneth L. Manning of Forestdale, a sister Laurie Sargent of Columbus, OH, 4 brothers; Charles Sargent of Hampton, NY, Michael Sargent, William Sargent and Fredrick Sargent all of Rutland. 4 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive her. She was predeceased by her parents and a son, Robert Stuart Manning.
    The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at 10 AM, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church officiating. Entombment will follow the service at Pine Hill Cemetery’s Receiving Vault, where the graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date.
    Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 7, from 4-7 PM.
