Saturday, September 21 the Mt. Abraham Eagles hosted the Spaulding High School Crimson Tide. The opening kickoff was returned by Mt. Abe’s Michael White to the 37 yard line. In the first play of the game senior captain Tommy Lee Hodsden picked up where White left off and ran the ball in for a touchdown. With a minute and thirty left in the first quarter junior quarterback Joey Payea hit junior tight end Tyrus Keith in the back of the endzone. At the end of the first half the score was 22-0 in the Eagle’s favor. The Crimson Tide attempted a rally in the 3rd quarter with a touchdown by senior Kevin Collins. But the Eagles defense was on top of their game, stopping the extra point attempt. After a Mt. Abe fumble and Spaulding recovery, senior Austin Lafayette had the fourth down stop that lead to a long pass by Joey Payea to Michael White who ran it in for another touchdown. With under three minutes to go in the game, senior captain Aaron Rowell handed the ball off to his younger brother sophomore Nate Rowell for a touchdown run that stunned Spaulding.
During the game Tommy Lee Hodsden surpassed 1,000 yards rushing so far this season. Junior linebacker Erik Eisenhower had 11.5 tackles as a part of the hard-hitting Mt. Abe defense. Eisenhower said of their success, “We have a few big keys, one being just working together on the field and supporting each other. Another key is working hard on days leading up to the game. We really strive to be the best team we can be.” Next week the Eagles take their game on the road to Windsor. The team’s next home game is Saturday October 5th at 3:00pm when they will host Oxbow High School.
