The immense flock of rubber ducky’s was poised above the Vergennes Falls against the clear blue sky of a summer day. They sat waiting the start of their momentous journey with their sleek plastic bodies bobbing in the waters of Otter Creek. Then with a shout and the sound of a starting gun they were off, carrying with them the hopes of the people lining the banks waiting to see who crossed the finish line first. A little melodramatic for your tastes? Perhaps but nonetheless a wonderful fundraising event where annually the Vergennes Rotary “Mavericks” raise funds for scholarships they present in June to graduating seniors. The race and results was epic this year with a record of approximately 1300 individual ducks and eighty corporate ducks sold. The Vergennes Rotary not only had a ‘ducky’ good time but put away a good amount into their scholarship fund. The winner of the corporate ducks was Hall Communications. First prize of $250.00 in the individual ducks went to the Boy & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes. Second prize of $100.00 was won by Ann Lynes and third prize of $50.00 floated away with Evan Ambrose. The Vergennes Rotary will formally thank all their donors in an upcoming paper but wanted to convey their sincere appreciation to all who bought a duck and all who came to watch the annual race on Otter Creek.
