The Vermont League of Women Boaters Are Paddling Your Way

Like many successful Vermont ventures, it all started with two friends and an idea. Founded in the summer of 2012, friends Barbi McDonald and Wendy Bruso started kayaking on Tuesday nights because both of their husbands played in the LC Jazz group and were at practice. Seeing Facebook postings from Bristol resident Robin Hewitt who was looking for kayaking partners, the trio started inviting friends and family with weekly emails and Facebook postings to alert the community.

“We are the Vermont League of Women Boaters and we are paddling our way around Addison County,” shared Wendy Bruso. “My husband named us and printed t-shirts for us.  Anyone is welcome.  You can give them my email address for anyone that is interested in joining us.  We usually have between 3-10 women joining us.  This summer we have paddled Otter Creek at the falls in Vergennes and at Fort Cassin, Lewis Creek, Lake Dunmore, Bristol Pond, Dead Creek both at the Rt. 17 access and the Panton Rd access, and Otter Creek above the falls in Middlebury.  We did couples kayaking for the full moon in July at dark on Dead Creek.  It is pretty scary there after dark!”

In addition to welcoming anyone to join them, the group has a few extra kayaks they offer to those joining them for the first time. With all levels of paddlers from first timers on up, the group is about spending time outside and enjoying how easy kayaking is to add to your life. “I think I like kayaking because I can do it myself,” reflected Bruso. “I can load it into my car and just go.  I enjoy the time spent outdoors, and getting to know new women.  I think people would be surprised how easy it is.  We choose places to paddle that are calm so we can enjoy the ride and not worry about waves, motorboats and wind.  It is also not very expensive to purchase your own kayak and paddles.” So check out their Facebook postings and get into the picture yourself with yet another way to enjoy Vermont, some new friends and explore the waterways of the county and state.
