Green Mountain Ice Cream

Tuesday August 6, 2013

While trodding on the paths of Addison County Field Days this next week keep your eyes open for a sweet spot in the action called Green Mountain Ice Cream. And, for those who know Dan Norris, the owner of Dan’s Starter Shop in Orwell, Vermont, there is the certainty that somehow this starts with the story of a motor, and indeed it does.

Dan’s shop specializes in heavy duty, off road and agricultural equipment and his business card even lists a specialty in Magneto and small engine parts. What started as a love of tractors and mechanics that Dan got from his father Gary Norris has evolved into the art of making ice cream. Dan got his first 1.5 horsepower McCormick Deering ‘hit and miss’ motor from a farmer in Bridport and turned it into an ice cream maker. Norris can make six quarts of ice cream in a batch and brought the machine to Addison County Field Days last year to demonstrate it and give away ice cream for people to try. Dan, encouraged by the positive feedback and requests for more upped his game with a 1925 John Deere Type E, 1.5 horsepower motor that makes five gallons in a batch. Keeping it simple he makes Vanilla, Chocolate and Maple flavors. The maple syrup is bought from a local and it is everyone’s favorite.

This is the first summer that Green Mountain Ice Cream has been in business and they have started bringing the new ice cream maker around and selling the ice cream. They have gone to antique shows, town celebrations, weddings and other events. It has become a great way for the family to work together and to do something fun. Dan's wife Kelly Norris and girls Courtney, Rhiana and Adrienne help serve the ice cream as well as Dan's father Gary Norris, his son Tyler, his girlfriend Whitney, and of course his granddaughter Aubrey.

Green Mountain Ice Cream will be at the Addison County Fair and Field Days again this year with a variety of different ‘hit and miss’ motors and Dan will be demonstrating how old fashion ice cream is made, and giving it away FOR FREE!  Keep your eyes open and look for the Green Mountain Ice Cream sign. It will be a sweet and tasty spot in your Addison County Field Days week.
