Local Pharmacist First to be AgriSafe Certified

Tuesday July 16, 2013

David Lewis, a pharmacist at the Marble Works Pharmacy in Middlebury, is the first pharmacist to be certified under a new program designed to enhance existing primary care and emergency services in rural practices and hospitals.

The AgriSafe Network is a program for rural practices, Critical Access Hospitals and agricultural service providers which complements existing medical services through:

• Up-to-date diagnostic and treatment information
• In-depth occupational health screenings
• On-site farm health and safety environmental evaluations

AgriSafe training provides information and skills needed to assist health care students and professionals in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of agricultural illness and injury. This program is for healthcare providers across the spectrum: primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, social workers, naturopathic physicians, acupuncturists, and agricultural professionals. This training, recently offered in Middlebury through the University of Vermont, was developed by a veterinarian at the University of Iowa, and is now required curriculum for their pharmacy students.

Pharmacy Health Services, a Vermont owned and operated healthcare company, includes the Marble Works Pharmacies in Middlebury, Vergennes and Bristol as well as the New England Mail Order Pharmacy, Vermont’s first and only mail order pharmacy helping local and national businesses of all sizes manage their prescription costs since 1995.

It also operates The Medicine Chest, Addison County’s only local source for home medical supply needs, offering equipment sales, rentals and service.
