Maxine Esther Thurston

BRANDON:Maxine Esther Thurston, age 81, died Thursday, June 13, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

    Mrs. Thurston was born in Andover, Maine on December 9, 1931. She was the daughter of Everett and Elsie (Sedgeley) Dresser. She grew up in Andover where she received her early education and was graduated from Andover High School, class of 1949. She afterwards attended the University of Maine, working her way through college as a waitress. She was graduated as one of the first women to earn a degree in business administration, from the U. Maine, class of 1953. June 12, 1954 she married Harmon Franklin Thurston in Andover, ME. They lived in Medford, Oregon for a year before returning back East to Massachusetts. In 1958 Harmon & Maxine moved to Brandon. Maxine had been a substitute teacher at Otter Valley Union High School for several years in the 1960’s. In the early 1970’s she ran a local day care center on Champlain Street. She and her husband owned and operated New England Woodcraft in Forestdale and Brandon. She was actively involved in many volunteer organizations over the years including; the League of Women Voters, Hospice and the Brandon Food Shelf. She was member of the Brandon United Methodist Church. She had a very big and caring heart for everyone and lived life to the fullest everyday. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, understanding and wonderful infectious laugh.

    Surviving is her husband Harmon Thurston of Brandon, son Lee and his wife Susan of Grass Valley, CA, daughter Lynn Thurston and her partner Janice Morong of Phillips, ME, son Charles Thurston and his wife Martha of Brandon and son Jeff Thurston and his wife Michele of Whiting, 7 grandchildren; Everett, Pierce, Mackenzie and Emmett Thurston and Avery, Payton and Grant Thurston, her sisters; Joyce Birch of Glen Allen, VA and Frances Kerchener of Wellesley, MA. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to; The Brandon Area Food Shelf, P.O. Box 345, Brandon, VT 05733.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
