When Veterans of Foreign Wars member Ron Browe speaks of Memorial Day there is a quiet determination in his voice and a solemn tone in addition to his choice of words. Both Ron’s grandfather and father served his county as well as four uncles in World War II. Ron joined himself because the nation was at the time drafting soldiers and he wanted a say in which branch he went in. Serving his nation from 1972-1976 in Asia and Guam. Ron works for Veterans of Foreign War and spends many of his days with comrades and works to assist veterans. “Most of this country’s citizens don’t know how or why their lives are free as they know them,” remarked Ron Browe. “Without some parents and teachers in schools, Veteran’s Day would be nothing but another holiday.”

For Browe the Veterans of Foreign Wars provides a huge push in Washington to get aid and medical needs that all veterans are entitled to. He remarked about this need for a political presence in DC for veterans to, “help change laws to protect veterans and their families, past, present and future.”  Browe will spend Veterans Day as he always has, remembering past military veterans and remembering our losses, our heroes and our military who serve. “We work with the school systems to evoke pride and understanding in our youth for what America stands for,” shared Browe. “The VFW has the Voice of Democracy speech competition and also offers Patriot’s Pen for the younger children. Winners receive scholarships and all involved learn about the history of the flag, veterans and the US Constitution.”

Devoted to veterans at all stages of their life, Browe and those who work with Veterans and agencies devoted to their needs see Memorial Day as more than a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is a reminder to use the freedoms we enjoy. To vote, to serve and to see in the flag a link to those who serve today, on guard, on duty and keeping America free.
