David Gibson

BRANDON:David Gibson, age 88, died Friday, March 8, 2013 at Helen Porter Healthcare & rehabilitation Center in Middlebury, following a long illness due to a stroke.

    He was born in Ayrshire County, Scotland on September 29, 1924. He was the son of David Sr. and Agnes Munn Gibson. David received his early education in Purchase, NY near Strathglass Farm where he grew up, and worked the farm with dairy cattle. He was a veteran of WW II having served in the United States Army. He was stationed in Italy and was involved in the battle of Central Europe. Following his honorable discharge he returned home and furthered his education at Cornell University earning his degree, class of 1950. He was on the Cornell Dairy Cattle Judging Team, which travelled throughout the country competing with other collegiate teams. He was Vice President of Alpha Zeta Honorary Agriculture Fraternity. While at Cornell he meth his future wife, Maridon Zimmerman, they were married in 1951. The Gibson’s moved to Brandon in 1957, where Dave became the Secretary/Treasurer of the National Ayrshire Breeders Association from 1957 until 1979. He travelled extensively throughout the United States, England, Scotland, Finland and South America during his tenure. He was a member and past president of the National Dairy Shire and had been a Trustee of The Eastern States Exposition. He later became the Executive Director of the Vermont School Boards Insurance Trust, and served in that capacity from 1979 until 1989. Locally, he was Chairman on the Otter Valley Union High School Board and had been a member and past president of the Brandon Rotary Club. He had also served on the Town Of Brandon as a selectman from 1992 until 1996, as well as the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. He was a member of the Brandon Congregational Church where he had served on many boards and committees.

    He is survived by his wife, Maridon of Brandon, sons; Scott & his wife Kathy of Essex, CT, & grandchildren; Kate & Ben; Craig & his wife Lesley of Andover, MA and grandchildren; Ginny & Natalie; Glenn & his wife Robbin of Stratton, VT & grandchildren; Cole & Libby, and his daughter, Polly & her husband Mike Goodspeed of Goshen, VT.

   The “Memorial Service in Celebration of His Life” was held on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Brandon Congregational Church. The Rev. Richard White, pastor will officiate.
 
A private graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, preceded the service, in Pine Hill Cemetery.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory to; Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center, Recreational Fund for the Residents, 30 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753.
 Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
