Distinguished Young Woman Offers Local Seniors in High School Women Scholarship Opportunities

Tuesday February 5, 2013

By Cookie Steponaitis

The Vergennes Opera House will host a scholarship competition open to Vermont young women in their senior year of high school on Sunday, March 3rd. The event is sponsored by the Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) and signals the 58th year that this organization has offered scholarships to America’s young women. At present the organization has provided over 90 million dollars to over 700,000 young women participants based on the teen’s scholastic grades, interview skills, talent, fitness and self-expression. DYW awards college scholarships ranging from cash to tuition and room/board scholarships to a diverse group of colleges around the nation. There is absolutely no cost for the girls to enter.

The newly selected Vermont program directors for DYW are no strangers to the process and in fact openly remark on how the program changed their lives. Vergennes Union High School and Middlebury College graduate Alexandra Larrow was Vermont’s winner in 2007 and tri-director Laura Hall won the award in 2007. The readers will notice there is no mention of a crown and DYW winners wear a medallion. The honor of being selected not only allows them to win some local scholarship funding but sends them to compete with the other fifty state winners for two weeks in late June for national level prizes including the first place prize $40,000 cash scholarship. The event is held at DYW headquarters in Mobile, Alabama and the trip and event is at NO cost to the contestant.

Tri-director Nancy Larrow remarked, “When Alex competed it impacted her life in a hugely positive way. She not only was valued for her scholastic achievements but for her student leadership, volunteerism and her public speaking.” Eager to share these same great opportunities with other Vermont teens both Hall and Larrow jumped at the chance to bring the program to the Champlain Valley and get the word out to all girls in their senior year of high school. By showcasing the Be Your Best Self Program, Distinguished Young Woman focuses all the teens on Be Healthy - Be Physically fit and drug free. Be Involved - Serve your community. Be Studious - Stay in school. Be Ambitious - Set and achieve goals. Be Responsible - Live by moral and ethical principles.

With the month moving on quickly, girls who are interested must act immediately. Please contact tri-directors Nancy Larrow at [email protected], Alexandra Larrow, [email protected] or Laura Hall at [email protected]. Contact must be made by February 15th.
