The Addison Repertory Theater (A.R.T), a program at Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center taught by Steve Small and Jess Krol, is an opportunity for both high school students and adult learns to learn the skills of theater and can focus on either Technical Theater or Performance, or a combination of both. The program provides a hands-on, active education in theatrical careers including costuming, acting, play writing, set construction, lighting, sound, community relations, promotions, and prop design. The program also helps students learn skills they would need to succeed in any field they may want to pursue such as public speaking, analytical reading, research, and professional writing. A.R.T second year student, Emmalee Schroeder-Smith says that, “all of the students support each other and that they're like a family.”

This past week, December 13-16, A.R.T performed a show written by six A.R.T students, Megan Ashley, Jocelyn Bedell, Jack Brisson, Lindsay Goodro, Megan Kelley, and Asa Learmonth, with the help of English teacher Sheena Strada. The show titled “The Heilen Curse” was a thriller about a woman named Rose Red, who was trapped in her house by a curse set upon her by her mother. The curse requires her to collect souls every twenty-five years in order to remain immortal. Rose Red, who was played by A.R.T second year Meghann Patten, required the help of brother and sister Willow and Jacob Grimm. Willow Grimm was played by second year A.R.T student Lois Rood, and Jacob Grimm was played by second year students Michael Danyow and Niko Salas. The brother and sister we also trapped in the house. The play was set on the two-hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the curse. Rose invited ten people who were all vulnerable for one reason or another saying that they could be healed while it was really a trap. Brother and sister Cleemen and Sammy Neeble arrive at the house in order to curse Sammy's illness. Sammy played by Jocelyn Bedell, and Cleemen played by Isaac Bicknell and Jack Brisson. As soon as everyone had arrived challenges were set to test them, and strange things started to happen. Jasper Christensen, a first year A.R.T student, said that he was impressed with the production and “it was a very successful show and we were all able to take a lot from it.”
After the show the audience was left curious for more and very intrigued, saying things like “what just happened?”, “what a great casting”, “this is an amazing program!” Director Steve Small reflected, “I believe that this show highlighted the skills of all of the A.R.T students,” and that he was very proud of all of his students. Adult learner in both the acting and the technical program, Amanda Mandriola, said that she'd “learned a lot from the program, and I believe that it is definitely going to help me later in my career.” Overall the production was a great success and was received well by all of the audiences, and as first year A.R.T student Zoe Bunch said “it was great!”

The Valley Voice is proud to welcome to its student writing staff VUHS junior Stephanie Anderson. Stephanie is involved in A.R.T, and active in school activities include cheerleading, student government, speech and writing competitions and planning the junior prom. Her career goals include continuing to write and securing a college degree in fashion merchandising and management.
