Velma May Thornton

Brandon -  The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Satuday, Dec 15, 2012 in St. Mary’s Church in Brandon for Velma May Thornton, age 88, who died in Brandon on December 7, 2012.  The Committal and Burial service followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Brandon.   Calling hours were scheduled for Friday, 4 – 8 PM in the Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home, 26 Franklin St, Brandon.  A full obituary will follow in a later edition.

Robert Ernest Duprey

Brandon - Robert Ernest Duprey, age 83, died Monday, December 10, 2012, at Mountain View Center in Rutland.

   Mr. Duprey was born in Chester on December 23, 2012. He was the son of Ernest A. and Ruth (Benson) Duprey. He grew up in Chester where he received his early education. In his earlier years he had worked as a woodsman, logging the mountains of Chester. He later farmed for a short while before moving to New Haven, CT. In New Haven he became a self employed roofer and continued working as a roofer until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, was an avid reader and fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He was a big bingo player.

   Surviving is his wife Rita Fuller Duprey of Brandon, 2 sons Ernest Robert Duprey of Reading and David Henry Duprey of Springfield, 5 daughters; Rosa-Lee Gould of Brandon, Stephanie Poleio of West Haven, CT, Leona Pratt of Manchester, NH, Bobbi-Jo Voight of Brandon and Theresa Dwire of Lawsonville, NC, 1 brother Richard Bruce of NH, a sister Marjorie Childs of Buxton, ME, 17 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Donald Foster Duprey and Gary Bruce and a sister Elizabeth Osgood.

   Friends payed their respects to the family on Thursday, December 13, 2012  at the Conant Square Apartments Day Room, in Brandon.

   A private burial will take place at a later date in Pleasant View Cemetery in Chester.

Hydeville - Beatrice Alice Howes,  age 101, died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Misty Heather Morn Community Care Home in Hydeville.

   Mrs. Howes was born March 30, 1911 in Hubbardton.  She received her education in Hubbardton and graduated from Sheldon’s School of Cosmetology in Burlington and became a licensed cosmetologist in 1948.  She owned and operated Bea’s Beauty Shop in Poultney for many years and later owned and operated Bea’s Beauty Shop in Fair Haven retiring in 1993.

   Mrs. Howes was predeceased by two sons, Clayton Jennings and Donald Jennings, three daughters, Joyce Jennings Sabourin, Barbara Jennings Rogers and Marjorie Jennings, two brothers, John Kilburn and Henry Kilburn, a sister, Agnes Hesselton, 5 of her grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.  She is survived by a special great granddaughter, Angela Woodbury and a special great great granddaughter, Kaylie-Ann Flannigan, both of Castleton and 10 grandchilden, 21 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her beloved cat Teenie.  A special thank you goes to Bernard Woodbury and Fran Tice for their care for Granny.

   As per Mrs. Howes wishes, there will be no funeral service or visiting hours.  Burial will take place in the family plot in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society, 739 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763.

   Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon is handling the arrangements.

Kenneth St. George

Bridport - Kenneth Guy St. George, 88, died Sunday evening, Dec. 9, 2012, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington.

Born March 21, 1924, in Bridport, he was the son of the late Guy Aiken and Ada (Selleck) St. George. He was a 1941 graduate of Middlebury High School.
Ken married Mignonne “Peggy” Mayer April 26, 1943, at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Bridport. Together they celebrated 69 years of marriage.

   Ken owned and operated a dairy farm in Bridport for many years. He also drove truck for Barrett’s Trucking; Emilo Fuel, Coal and Building Supply; and I.B.A. Trucking and was a private contractor with the United States Postal Service, transporting mail from Burlington to Albany, N.Y. He was a dispatcher for Middlebury College campus security for 11 years before his retirement. He enjoyed bass fishing, crosswords, hunting, bowling, mowing lawns, being outdoors and feeding the birds.

   He is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Bridport; his son Roger St. George of Moriah, N.Y., and his significant other, Stella Rathbun; his daughters, Sandra Burke of Leicester, Vicki Nolette and her husband, Gene, of Leicester, Patti Dapsis and her husband, Jacob, of Bridport, and Penny Upson of East Middlebury; his sister, Mary Cauchon of Middlebury; grandchildren David Burke and his wife, Diane, Michael Burke and his wife, Dawn, Debbie Burke and her fiancé, Charles Sumner, Mindee Burke, Stacy Lynn Huestis and her husband, Nathan, Jeremy Nolette, Nichole Nolette and her fiancée, Kenneth Gilbert III, and Peggy Diane Upson and her fiancée, Shawn Milisci; great-grandchildren Matt Burke, Maggie Burke, Ellie Burke, Amanda Burke, Sean Burke, Tia Burke-Sumner, Derek Donald St. George, Laila Marie Huestis and Khasey Benjamin Nolette Gilbert; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

   He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Kenneth St. George, in 1951; his sons-in-law Donald Burke, who died Jan. 20, 1984, and William Upson II, who died Dec. 7, 1987; and his brother-in-law Lloyd Cauchon.

   A memorial Mass was celebrated on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012,  at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, Bridport, with the Rev. William Beaudin as celebrant.

Marjorie Coutware Huestis

   Marjorie Coutware Huestis, 96 of Bridport, VT died Monday December 10, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family, under the care of her family and Hospice.

   She was born on May 4, 1916 in South Hero, Vermont.  She was the daughter of Frank and Mary (Roberts) Coutware.  She attended grade school in South Hero, Mount St. Mary’s Academy in Burlington and UVM.  She married Leo Huestis in 1942 in South Hero, Vermont and after 35 years of marriage Leo died on September 23, 1977.  Marjorie taught six years at the Potash Bay School in Addison and for one year at the Hawthorn one room school house in Bridport before becoming a stay-at-home Farmer’s wife and mother.  She was a devout Catholic and active member of the community.   She was a member of the Bridport Ladies Home Dem., St. Bernadette’s Altar Society, a founding member and secretary of the Bridport Historical Society, and of the Bridport Senior Citizens, she enjoyed traveling with the New Horizon’s Club.  She loved to garden and play card games.   She was cared for at home especially by her son Bob and granddaughter Debbie Manning.  

   Marjorie is survived by her children; Robert Huestis of Bridport, Theresa and Jim McBride of Panton, David and Tina Huestis of Bridport, Marianne and Andrew Manning of Bridport and William Huestis of Bridport.  She is also survived by her Grandchildren; James McBride, Amy & Jim Bourne, Terry McBride and Kacey Sornberger, Carole McBride and Dirk Smits, Kathy McBride, Amanda McBride, Stephanie and Robert Bergeron, Jay Huestis, Sarah Manning and Sally Seekings, Rachel Manning, Rebecca Manning, Debbie Manning, Judith Manning and Randy Manning. She is also survived by 12 Great Grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Leo Huestis and her sisters; Evelyn Dubois, Grace Opie and Gladys Kutcher.

   A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday December 15, 2012 at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Bridport. Rev. William Beaudin celebrated the mass.   Burial followed the Mass at Bridport Central Cemetery.  

Muriel A. Fielder

Goshen -    Muriel A. Fielder, 82, died unexpectedly upon arrival at her daughter’s home in Sarasota, Floriday on Thursday, December 6, 2012.  Funeral arrangements are pending at Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home.
