Steven Michael Sabourin

ORWELL:Steven Michael Sabourin, age 60, died Sunday, December 02, 2012, following a long illness, at his home in Orwell.

    Mr. Sabourin was born in Middlebury on August 20, 1952. He was the son of Edward and Joyce (Jennings) Sabourin. He was a graduate of Otter Valley Union High School, class of 1970, where he played baseball for 3 years and was southpaw pitcher. He had worked at White Pigment Corporation before joining the United States Navy in 1971. Following his discharge he became a self employed carpenter and builder. He has been a resident of Orwell for over 30 years, where he had also raised beef cattle. He was forced to retire due to illness in 2007. Steve loved books and was a voracious reader. He enjoyed Snowmobiling, hunting and fishing.

    He is survived by his sister Marie Hayes & her husband Richard of Forestdale, his cousin and care provider; Gary & Candi Rogers of Hydeville, a nephew Christopher Hayes and niece Rebecca Clark and grand nephew; Kyle Notte and grand niece Shelby McDonough. He was predeceased by his father Edward in 1972 and his mother Joyce in 2007 and a brother James in 1958.

    A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial “In Celebration of His Life” wad celebrated on Friday, December 7, 2012,at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Ruel Tumangday will be the celebrant. The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will follow in the family lot, at Pine Hill Cemetery.

    Following the ceremony the family will receive friends at St. Mary’s Church Parish Hall, for a time of fellowship & remembrance.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory to; Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Virginia M. Shahan

MIDDLEBURY:Virginia M. Shahan, age 91, died Saturday, December 01, 2012, at the home of her daughter in Leicester.

    Mrs. Shahan was born in Kirksville, Missouri on January 12, 1921. She was the daughter of Owen and Irene (Ford) James. She received a scholarship from Kirksville State Teachers College, where she earned her teacher’s certificate and taught for several years before moving to Middlebury in 1958. She began teaching at the Vocational High School and other various schools in Addison County. She joined the staff at Middlebury Union High School, where she taught remedial reading for many years. She had also taught at the junior high level as well. She once remarked that she never had a student that she didn’t love. In May 1946 she married the love of her life; First Lieutenant Jesse Shahan. Mr. Shahan predeceased her in 1999. She loved music and reading her bible.

    Survivors included her daughter; Marianne Laroche & her husband Ike of Leicester; with whom she had recently made her home; 2 sons, Michael Shahan & his wife Denise of Rutland and Matthew Shahan & his wife Catherine of Monkton, one brother; Max James & his wife Lois of Mentor, Kansas. 8 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive her. She was predeceased by a grandson; Joshua Magill in 1998.

    The Memorial Service “In Celebration of Her Life” will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2012,  at Victory Baptist Church in Vergennes. The Rev. Timothy Taylor, pastor will officiate. A private graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date in Foote Street Cemetery in Middlebury.

   Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to; Victory Baptist Church, 862 US Rte. 7, Vergennes, VT 05491 or by visiting a lonely person and brighten their day.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
