The Middlebury Tigers handedly defeated the Rutland Red Raiders in the first post-season game 42-14, Friday night October 26.  Their third win in a row Middlebury’s momentum was in full gear with a total of over 530 yards throughout the night.  Of those 530, Nick Felkl owned 208 yards with 23 carries.

Middlebury drew first blood as their QB Tyler Provencher scored a 74 yard touchdown with 7:06 left on the clock in the first quarter.  The point after was good.  The Tigers continued clawing for another score and were rewarded in the second quarter, when Nick Felkl rushed 20 yards through bringing the score to 14-0.  Late in the second quarter, deep in Tiger territory on a Middlebury fumble, Rutland took advantage and got on the board.  Raider senior Joe Sullivan pierced through the line to score a one yard touchdown.  Responding, Tiger Mitchell Clarke scored as he flew into the end zone and brought the score to 21-7.  With 42.3 seconds left in the second quarter Rutland’s Nick Boles answered with a 42 yard touchdown throw to Rocco Stoutes, the PAT good to end the half 21-14.

The Tigers scored early in the third as Nick Felkl recovered a fumble, scored his second touchdown and brought the score to a 28-14 lead.  With 4:23 left in the third Nick Felkl took the ball in again for a two yard touchdown, the score 35-14.  Darren Desbrais scored Middlebury’s final touchdown of the night after he found a whole in the line and ran it in.  Josh Stearns had 100% accuracy kicking points after touchdowns.  The defense was on their game and kept a tight rein on the Raider offense.  Middlebury defenseman Trevor Emilo recapped; “We gave every little bit of energy we had to this game –we never let up.  Nick Felkl played his heart out.  We kept them contained and inside.  I can’t give enough credit to our whole D.  The first time we played them we could not stop the run.  We knew exactly what we had to do this game.”  Trevor a senior defensive end for Middlebury was very proud of his squad.

The Tigers are now at 6-3 and will travel to Hartford next Friday at 7 p.m. to play in a semi-final game.  Also just announced, Tiger seniors Walter Odell, Derek Bagley and Mitchell Clarke will play in the North-South game coming up in November.  Middlebury's own Dennis Smith will coach the South this year.  Alternates in that game will be Gabe Laberge and Tyler Provencher.
