The rain came down in sheets, the pumpkins glowed at the field’s end to honor the seniors on senior night, and the Tigers were in their element.  Mitchell Clarke commented, “Mud is all about Middlebury.  We love it here.  Our boys played hard tonight.  We won as a team tonight.  We weren’t thinking about where we were gonna be, we just needed to win this game for us and for our fans too.”  Certainly mud was their turf as they pounded the CVU Redhawks 35-7 at Doc Collins Field.  Middlebury gained a total of 440 rushing yards as the players literally slipped and slid throughout the night ending their regular season 5-3.

The steady downpour seemed to lift the spirits of the crowd and the players when on the first offensive play of the night, Middlebury’s Nick Felkl took the ball into the end zone from 38 yards out on an interception and set the tone for the game.  Not long after, Middlebury fullback, Jacob Trautwein scored from one yard out with the PAT good the score was now 14-0.  Halfway through the second quarter with 7:20 left on the clock Nick Felkl scampered 85 yards to score, ending the half 21-0.  CVU only had 35 rushing yards at this point.  The third quarter was scoreless but the Tigers did their part possessing the ball the majority of the time.  On the first play of the fourth quarter Middlebury senior Mitchell Clarke ran 18 yards and scored a touchdown.  The PAT was good and the score was now 28-0.  Cullen Hathaway, scored Middlebury’s final touchdown of the night on a 15 yard TD play.  With the PAT good the score was 35-0 as it neared the game’s end.  The CVU Redhawks finally put a number on the board as Davis Mikell caught Bennett Cazayoux’s bullet seven yard pass which brought in the final score 35-7.  The crowd donned their rain gear and was a bit smaller but the energy was positive.  After more than an inch of rain had fallen many of the players celebrated their evening as they dove helmet first into the substantial mud pond which accumulated next to the field.  Next week get ready for the Division I playoff pairings which will be announced in the near future.
