Harold Russell Barrett

Bridport – Harold Russell Barrett, 71, of Bridport died peacefully Wednesday, October 10th, 2012 at his home in Bridport after a battle with cancer.  He was born December 27th, 1940 in Sharon CT, the son of Russell and Hazel (Doane) Barrett.

   He worked as a mechanic for a number of automotive dealerships in MA thru the sixties and early seventies and when he returned to VT in 1975, he started working for Champlain Valley Equipment in Middlebury.  He also owned and operated his own custom farm service business for several years.  After selling his business, he worked for local farmers until he retired in 2003.

   He was a member of the Addison County Eagles, The Loyal Order of Moose in Zephyrhills FL, Otter Valley Sams, and the Green Mountain Chapter of FMCA.

   He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet (Briggs), his son Mark and wife Ramona of Barstow CA, his son Harold Paul and wife Charlene of Bridport, and his daughter Susan also of Bridport.  Also survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, two brothers Howard and Leonard Barrett and his wife Linda of Bridport, his three sisters Joyce Paquette of New Haven, Rita and husband Kevin Gero of Rutland, and Harriet Murray of Burlington.   

   He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Pauline Bryant.

   Per his request there will be no calling hours.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Addison County Home Health & Hospice in New Haven, VT.  The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Nunnink’s office and Addison County Home Healthy & Hospice for their care and support.

WILBUR CLARK “BILL” JOHNSON

LEICESTER:Wilbur Clark “Bill” Johnson, age 87, died Sunday, October 7, 2012, at his home in Leicester.

    Mr. Johnson was born in Agawam, Massachusetts on December 30, 1924. He was the son of Paul and Maud (Hess) Johnson. He grew up in Agawam where he received his early education. He had attended Agawam High School. In his earlier years he had worked at General Baking Company in Agawam. He joined the United States Army in 1943 and served in the European Theatre of Operations. He was involved in 5 major battles, including, The Rhineland, Central Europe, Southern France, Naples Foggia and Rome Arno. Among his numerous military decorations are the Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge. Following his honorable discharge he came to his brother’s home in Weston, VT where he and his brother operated a lumber mill. He later returned to Agawam and work with Webster Construction. He had been a carpenter for most of his life. He moved to Leicester in the 1976. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed boating.

    Surviving are his step children; Claire McDonnell of Killington, Dolly LaFleur, Jane Bilodeau and Leslie Melanson all of Agawam, MA, Shirley Shewchuk of Myrtle Beach, SC and his nephew Thomas Kozan of Ridgecrest, CA. He was predeceased by his partner in life, Doris Melanson on November 10, 1998, his brother Gordon Johnson and a sister Eleanor Kozan.

    The funeral service was held on Friday, October 12, 2012, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church will officiate. A private graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will take place, at a later date, in Agawam Center Cemetery in Agawam, MA. Charles Richard Hurst

No. Clarendon-Charles Richard Hurst, age 73, died Sunday, October 07, 2012, at Rutland Health & Rehabilitation Center.

    Mr. Hurst was born in Arlington, Virginia on February 14, 1939. He was the son of Henry and Lena (Sweeney) Hurst. He was graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He began his working career as a movie theater manager. He later worked in retail sales in the Washington D.C. area. He was forced to retire in 1978 due to his failing eyesight. He has been a resident North Clarendon in 1983, moving here from Alexandria, VA. He was a communicant at Christ the King Catholic Church. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He had also worked as a volunteer at Rutland Hospital for several years. He enjoyed old movies and listening to the morning news.

    Surviving is his wife Janet Ann (Paquin) Hurst of North Clarendon; whom he married in Newport, VT, on August 25, 1962, his daughter Heather Hurst of North Clarendon, a sister Margaret “Margie” Hubbard of Alexandria, VA; sister’s-in-law, Rita Palmer and Grace Aines both of Brandon, a nephew Shawn Genier, a niece Vicki Genier and Grand Nephew, Kameryn Genier all of Leicester. Many other nieces, nephews & cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by 5 brothers; Louis, Henry, Joseph, William and Stanford Hurst and 2 sisters, Peggy Stone and Helen Croyle.

    A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, October 11, 2012 , at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Ruel Tumangday, pastor will be the celebrant. Following the mass the family will receive friends at the home of Grace Aines and Rita Palmer, for a time of fellowship & remembrance. A private burial will take place, at a later date.
