BFA Prevails 21-3 Over Tigers

  The victory over Otters Valley last week gave the Tiger Football team confidence  as they hosted a very sound  BFA Bobwhites at Doc Collins Field on Friday evening October 5th.  They remained confident throughout the game but could not get their  potent triple-option offense clicking.

   BFA runs, runs,  then runs some more.  If your team is having a bad night in the turnover department it could be a long one and that was the case for Middlebury now (3-3) on the year. The Tigers first fumble on a punt return gave BFA the ball at mid-field early in the first quarter. This time the big crew from Franklin County methodically ran the ball to  the five yard line where senior Doug Saffo powered in for a touchdown.  The Tiger defense rose to the occasion and  blocked the point-after attempt with a big kick rush.    

   Middlebury got a nice drive going and then began to stall inside the BFA  30-yard line.  Enter Tiger Junior Josh Stearns to nail a 22-yard field goal and the score was quickly 6-3 Bobwhites.   That would be the scoring for the Tigers on this night. Both teams traded turnovers in the second quarter and played rugged one-on-one football at the line of scrimmage.  

   Middlebury would grab a yard or two with Junior Sam Smith lugging off tackle behind good blocking support up front and BFA would counter with their senior fullback Luke “the load” Kelsey.   It remained a stand-off until the clock ticked down to a few seconds left in the first half and BFA sophomore kicker Robert Kelley got the green light from his coach Geoff Murray to try a 42-yard field goal.  To say that Kelley put a charge into it would be correct and accurate.  The ball went end over end and hooked by the left upright well into the north end zone from 42-yards out,  a big momentum boost for BFA just before the half.  It was one of the longest ever kicked in a game at Doc Collins ending the first half 9-3 Bobwhites. The third quarter was a stand-off with both teams unable to do much business in the red zone.  Both teams were able to stop the other on key third down situations. The Tigers drove to the BFA 15-yard line early in the 3rd but were turned away on a 4th down play by the BFA defense.  The second half saw the Bobwhites outscore the Tigers 12-0 with two touchdowns coming in quick succession in the fourth quarter.

    BFA went to a (put it away), offense and continued to grind out yardage and use up clock against a Tiger defensive unit that had to spend a lot of time on the field.  Middlebury was unable to break through in spite of hard runs by Sam Smith, Mitchell Clark, and quarterback Tyler Provencher.  On the defensive side Austin Robinson played a strong game and had an  interception.

   Next Week the Tigers are headed to Colchester on Friday night for a Columbus Day evening clash with the Lakers who turned back Rutland last week 21-20, as they continue their fight to play in the post-season.
