Chester Sawyer Ketcham

MIDDLEBURY/BRANDON-Chester Sawyer Ketcham, age 84, died Sunday, September 16, 2012, at The Lodge at Otter Creek in Middlebury.

    He was the son of Olin G. and Ruth (Sawyer) Ketcham. He was born in Salisbury on December 6, 1927, waiting a few weeks for the 1927 flood to subside. Mr. Ketcham graduated from Brandon High School in 1945, The University of Vermont in 1951 and Yale Law School in 1954. He served as the third law clerk for the Honorable Ernest W. Gibson in the United States District Court. He practiced law in Waterbury, Burlington and Middlebury. He also was appointed Deputy Attorney General during the legislative reapportionment in the early 1960’s. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 until 1947. Chet was elected to the Vermont General Assembly in 1974 and served three terms. He was elected to the Vermont Senate in 1986. In 1990 he was elected Addison County Probate Judge and served until his retirement in 1999. After retirement he wrote a book entitled “Nonsense, No Nonsense and Other Things”. He was elected President of the Vermont Bar Association in 1980. He was also elected to a six year term to the Board of Trustees of the University of Vermont. He was past president of the Middlebury Lions Club and had served on the Scholarship Committee. He also served on the Mary Force Scholarship Committee in Brandon. He was an avid golfer and member of the Neshobe Golf Club, where he had served for many years on the board of directors. He was a member of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge #25 for more than 60 years. Chet married Catherine Marotti in 1971. Catherine passed away on December 5, 2008. His parents and his brothers; Arthur W. Ketcham and Russell P. Ketcham predeceased him.

    He is survived by his daughter; Tamara Ketcham Baldauf and her husband Robert and his grandson, Robert Olin Tanner Baldauf and granddaughter, Ema Jett Baldauf and his step children, Douglas Cook, Michel Blair and Peter Cook.

    A memorial mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, September 21, 2012, , at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Ruel Tumangday, pastor was the celebrant. A private graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, followed, in the family lot, in Pine Hill Cemetery.

 Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

ROBERT CLEMENT COUSINO

MONKTON-Robert Cousino 87, died suddenly September 15, 2012, in Bristol,Vt. Robert was born April 10, 1925 in Bristol, to Felix and Delia (Provoncha) Cousino. Robert grew up on the family dairy farm in Bristol and attended Bristol High School. He married Bridget Gevry on Oct. 18, 1947 in St Ambrose CatholicChurch, Bristol, where he faithfully attended services and volunteered for as long as his health would allow. Robert worked with his brother Paul in Bristol until the spring of 1957, when he and Bridget bought their dairy farm in East Monkton, where they worked, played, entertained and raised six children.

        In 1990 they sold the farm to become snowbirds and join their many siblings and friends in the Ruskin, Fl. area. Together Robert and Bridget worked many extra jobs. He was custodian at Monkton Central School, school bus driver, carpenter and held several town offices. He was always there for a neighbor that needed help and would often put their needs before his own. He was member and held offices in The Lion's Club, Knights of Columbus, Florona Grange and ran the Saint Ambrose Bingo for many years.

        Robert took great joy in his grandchildren and going to "the beach" with them. He liked to garden, tinker and play cards. He enjoyed a kind practical joke and many were on the receiving end of them.

                He is survived by his daughter Helen Cousino, sons and spouses, Marcel and Zandra, Michael and Connie, Levi and Margot, Victor and Penny (all of Monkton), 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Robert will once again be with his wife of sixty two years Bridget, son Maurice and grandson Scott in Heaven. Also his parents; sisters Edith Cousino, Belle LeCours, and Mary Bolduc; his brothers Lawrence, Raymond, and Paul.

       The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and deep appreciation to; Addison County Home Health, Elderly Services, Inc and Project Independence of Middlebury and especially Heather Shepard for their wonderful care.

   A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday September 22nd at St. Ambrose Church in Bristol. Burial followed at Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Robert's name to; Saint Ambrose Caring Community, 11 School Street, Bristol, Vt. 05443, or Elderly Services, 112 Exchange Street, Middlebury, Vt. 05753.

Shirley Frances LaPorte

LEICESTER:Shirley Frances LaPorte, age 90, died Monday, September 17, 2012, at her home in Leicester.

 Mrs. LaPorte was born in Granville, NY on February 9, 1922. She was the daughter of George and Genie (Cone) Taylor. In her earlier years she had worked at Rosen’s National Store in Brandon. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, dancing, collecting angels and cooking special treats for family and friends. She enjoyed family gatherings. She was predeceased by her first husband Waven Sprague in 1961.

 Surviving is her husband, Donald LaPorte of Leicester; they were married in Brandon on October 23, 1970, her children; Colleen Gardner of Pittsford, Ronald Sprague and his wife Barb of Brandon, Gary Sprague and his wife Dorothy of Rutland Town, her sister Esther Hawley and her husband Maurice of Rutland, her grandchildren; Sherry LaPorte & her husband Rick of Chittenden, Shelley Smith and her husband Stub of Chittenden, Donna Hosking & her husband David of Essex Jct., Chris Sprague & his wife Bethany of West Rutland, Kimberly Sprague of South Burlington, Chad Sprague of Rutland, Carrie Gibbs of Poultney, Michael LaPorte of Forestdale, Judy Lamoureux of Athol, NY, Kathy Hayes of Brandon and her best friend Marilyn LaPorte. Many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and her mother-in-law, Bernice Laporte also survive her. She was predeceased by an infant son, Daniel Sprague, her brother Roland Taylor, infant sister Flora Taylor, her parents George & Genie Taylor and daughter’s-in-law’s; Judy Sprague and Donna Sprague.

   The memorial service “In Celebration of Her Life” was held September 23, 2012, at 1 PM, at the Brandon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kathleen Bevan, pastor  officiated.

   Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to; Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

REAL RICHARD CHARLEBOIS

    Real Richard Charlebois, 86, of Burlington, passed away on Sunday, Sept.9, 2012 at The Arbors in Shelburne. We are so grateful for the time we were able to spend with him during his final years. Real  ( Mr.C) was born in Weybridge on February 26, 1926, to Oliver and Clara (Pomainville) Charlebois. He spent his early years as he had his entire life, working hard and instilling an incredible work ethic in his three sons.

    Real worked many years for W.C. Kirby and was proud of the responsibilities that the Kirby’s placed on him. On April 1, 1962, Real, together with his wife Bertha, Started Charlebois and Sons garage in Burlington. He worked countless hours to create a successful, well-respected business. His three sons grew up knowing the value of a dollar and continued in the business with him.

    Real was preceded in death by his devoted wife Bertha; his granddaughter Kristen Laure Charlebois; his brother Richard Charlebois; and his two sisters, Anita Godard and Rea Booth. Real is survived and lovingly remembered by his three sons and their wives, Roger and Patricia Charlebois, Ronald and Mary Charlebois and Raymond and Ann Marie Charlebois. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses, Randall and Paola Charlebois, Todd and Danielle Charlebois, Shane Charlebois, Kate and Aaron Stone, Melissa and Scott Mills, Alison Duprey and Emily and Timothy Davis; and great-grandchildren Zachery Mills, Olivia Davis, Micah Charlebois and Natalie Stone. He is also survived by his loving sisters and brothers, Simone Masse of Old Chatham, N.Y., Rita Booska of New Haven, Vt., Jeanne Bernek of Florida, Eugene Charlebois and his wife, Judy, of Addison and Bernard and his wife Marsella Charlebois, of Spring Field, Ore. Real also leaves many nieces and nephews.

    The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the many loving and dedicated employees of The Arbors in Shelburne. They are also so appreciative of the countless hours that Real’s devoted sister, Rita Booska, spend with him these past three years. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. and entombment followed at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington.
