Vermont Ice Storm Semi-Professional Football Team Adds Locals to Roster

Tuesday July 17, 2012

by Cookie Steponaitis

After a one year leave of absence, the Vermont Ice Storm is once again in the Empire Football League consisting of Albany, Syracuse, Glens Falls, Watertown, Pittsburgh, Amsterdam, Monroe County, and Montreal and ready for action. Entering its eleventh season, the team is ready, pumped and channeling the warrior like qualities of fearlessness and audacity. Comprised of a mixture of veterans and new comers, the bulk of the team has extensive experience in playing semi-pro football and has made the playoffs all but one time and has won many division championship titles and league championships in 2002 and 2007.

Joining the team are VUHS graduates and football players Gary Grant, Trevor Sampson and Aaron Desabrais. The boys heard about the team through a former football player from Winooski who played on the Winooski Spartans with them during high school.  When asked about playing for the Ice Storm, Grant remarked, "I love it, you get to meet a lot of guys from different places with a lot of talent. It's more intense than high school, when you get hit you know it. The coaches are great, some are ex-players and they all have years of experience. It's great to see our family, friends, and former coaches from Winooski sitting in the stands supporting us. The team isn't as well-known as it should be. It would be great to see more fans in the stands." Echoing those sentiments Trevor Sampson added, "The team history is important, there are ex-players coaching and a lot of former players follow the team. I'm glad for the opportunity to play and like to see the fans and former players in the stands."

Looking for an exciting way to spend a Saturday night? All Ice Storm home games are held at South Burlington High School Saturday nights @ 7:30PM. Gary Grant is #22, Trevor Sampson is #54 and Aaron Desabrais is #66.
