The Ilsley Library has  some great offerings, and just as we turn the corner into the summer season it is a great time to find what is available.  Speaking with Susan Gowen, library assistant II, and David Clark the director of the library, they let me know of some services the library community may not be aware of.  Gowen said, "When patrons request books we do not own, if the budget allows, we try to buy them.  Some people want to read everything an author has ever written, so we will borrow from other libraries.   I don't think people realize how far away we go to get the books people want.  We have had books here from Texas and California, and we lend out books to other libraries as well."  Letting the public know that there are many venues for aquiring a piece, David Clark described that one particular person had been doing research for a book.  The author needed many books on one subject and also needed some from a specific author which the Ilsley did not own.  Through the inter-library loan system the Ilsley was able to temporarily aquire the hard to find books.  The Ilsley does ask patrons to help pay for the postage of the loans.

Clark admits that there is a small glitch in the audio book loan service; " We can usually find the physical books somewhere.  There are some books only published in the electronic book (e-book) format, like for the Kindle or the Nook.  There is no way yet for an institution to borrow an e-book.  That is a new little wrinkle." The Ilsley has a wide range of audiobooks for rent through their system, and the unavailable e-books has not caused too much of an issue.

Also available through the Ilsley are Universal class offerings.  Universal classes are free online classes with over 540 courses, including dog training, herbs, homeschooling strategies, basic law and criminology, computers, and technology. This is a new service provided to us through the state library. Login with your library barcode.   One more new and noteworthy option for library users is the option to try a Kindle, iPad, Nook, or an MP3 player, and an iPod Nano. Ask at the adult loan desk for availability.

The Ilsley is also able to borrow movies from Netflix, a service that people may not know about.  They have a great movie collection but if there is something they do not own, or an older movie that does not circulate often, they have Netflix as a resource.  The same fees apply for Netflix movies; it is free for the first three days and then after that it is a dollar a day.  Borrowers do not have to physically come in to the library or call us to reserve anything.   David explains,  "We get a lot of requests for materials that people want to read, listen to and watch over the internet.  You do not have to come in or call, you can simply do it over the internet."  The online address is Ilsleypubliclibrary.org.  One more way the Ilsley offers so much and makes it so easy for customers.
