When Kyle Grant went to the front of the school auditorium to receive an award for his talents in art, his teacher Jeff Spencer remarked that, “Kyle loves to create. There are reasons that this could be considered difficult for this young man, but giving into difficulty is not the way he rolls.” Rolls indeed! Kyle is a sophomore at VUHS and like many teens is eagerly anticipating summer vacation. However, for Kyle there is a twist because this teen actually looks forward to chores and especially lawn work.

Kyle is the son of Scott and Betsy Grant and lives in Addison, Vermont. Born with Myotubular Myopathy, Kyle uses a wheel chair to get around and relies on a ventilator to help him breath. Those are the only two limitations Kyle will allow, because he is too busy challenging and enjoying life to see any others. An avid outdoorsman, Kyle loves any excuse to be out on the lake, outdoors or to get his shot at mowing the lawn. Kyle shared his thoughts about his summer plans stating that, “Summer is a time to have as much fun as you can. I like to be outside in any season, but summer is really my time. Whether I am in my go-cart, on the lawn or just having fun, I love summer and literally can’t wait every year for it to come.”

After a full day of school Kyle still finds time and energy for sports and is a member of a power soccer league that recently did a demonstration for the students at VUHS. “I go to practice in a gym in Burlington and the league plays all year long. This summer we have a tournament or two out of state and it is fun to go with the team to compete in other places.” Another summer passion involves Lake Champlain or seeing Addison County by air. A friend of the family took Kyle and his dad Scott flying over the countryside in 2011. “It was cool flying over the mountains and trees,” shared Kyle. “The inside of the plane was also fun to look at with all of the gadgetry and wiring.”

Yet another passion of this active teenager is art. Recently Kyle completed a 4X8 foot mural of a 2009 Corvette which hangs on display with other classmates’ works at VUHS.  With summer plans that include attending a NASCR race in Loudon, New Hampshire and hoping to catch a glimpse of his favorite racers Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon, Kyle is looking forward to getting into the swing of summer, but already has his eye set on his junior year in the fall.

The Valley Voice salutes Kyle Grant for his passion for life and his love of the outdoors. Keep on rolling, Kyle, and if you tire of the acre lawn you mow with such passion at home, come and see us at the paper, because between us we have another six acres that could use a trim!
