Richard Norman Rivers

Brandon—Richard Norman Rivers, 85, died Monday, May 14, 2012, at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.

 Mr. Rivers was born in Benson on March 6, 1927. He was the son of Chancial and Mabel (Andrus) Rivers. He grew up in Rochester where he received his early education. He moved to Brandon with his family in 1941 and was graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1945. He joined the United States Army in August 1945 and served in the European Theater of Operations. Following his honorable discharge in 1947 he returned home and began work as a mechanic for Lee Smith’s Garage in Brandon. He later owned and operated his own garage in Forestdale. He began working as a tractor mechanic for Cartmell’s Sales and Service in Middlebury, later known as Green Mountain Tractor. He had served as mechanic and shop foreman and retired as sales manager in 1990, following 40 years of service. He was an avid golfer and a founding member of the Neshobe Golf Club in 1958. He was a former member of Brandon Volunteer Fire Department and had been a past president of Dunmore Hose Company. He belonged to the Brandon American Legion Post #55. He enjoyed going to camp and keeping up his property. He was very mechanically inclined and loved to tinker with anything mechanical.

 Surviving are 2 sons; Brian D. Rivers of Brandon and Richard H. Rivers of Stockbridge. 3 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter and several cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by his wife; Dorothy Mae Harris Rivers on March 25, 2005; whom he married in Brandon on January 12, 1948.

 The memorial service “In Celebration of His Life” was held on Monday, May 21, 2012, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church officiated. The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, followed in the family lot, at Pine Hill Cemetery.

 Following the ceremony the family received friends at the Congregational Church Hall, for a time of fellowship & remembrance.
