EARL ALVIN HURLBURT, SR.

SALISBURY: Earl Alvin Hurlburt, Sr., age 88, died Monday, April 16, 2012, with his family by his side.
Mr. Hurlburt was born in Bristol on June 14, 1923. He was the son of Newton and Lorraine (Wheelock) Hurlburt. He received his early education in local Bristol schools and attended Bristol High School. He entered the United States Army in April 1946 and served in post war Japan with the 23rd. Infantry Regiment. Following his honorable discharge he returned home and worked for Fred Wyman Farms for several years. He later worked as a woodsman, logging various parts of the state for Raymond Reed. From 1953 until his retirement in 1993 he worked for Brown’s Novelty in East Middlebury. He was a member of Middlebury American Legion Post #27 and Middlebury V.F.W. Post #7823. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed wood woodworking, auto mechanics and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his children; Earl A. Hurlburt, Jr., of Middlebury, Laura Bougor and her husband Larry of Middlebury, Norma Leduc and her husband Marcel of Ripton, Jim Hurlburt and his wife Lisa of  Bluffton, SC and Debra Hurlburt and her husband Russ Lawton of Salisbury, one brother Bernard Hurlburt of Starksboro and a sister Marion Provoncha of Bristol. 12 Grandchildren, 18 Great Grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by his wife Kathy Cormier Hurlburt on July 27, 2010; they were married in Brandon on December 13, 1952. 2 sister’s Beatrice Hurlburt and Bernice Hurlburt also predeceased him.

The funeral services were held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Salisbury Congregational Church. The Rev. John Grivetti, pastor officiated. The graveside committal service and burial followed, in the family lot, at West Salisbury Cemetery.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory to; Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753 or to The Addison County Humane Society, 234 Boardman Street, Middlebury, VT. 05753.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

RAYMOND A. DANYOW  JR.

MIDDLEBURY;  Raymond A. “Buck” Danyow Jr. 86, died Sunday April 15, 2012 at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington surrounded by his family.

He was born July 14, 1925 in Middlebury the son of the late Raymond A.  and Marie (Cota)      Danyow Sr.
Buck was a graduate of Middlebury High School. He married Lucy E Shaw on April 24, 1946.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church of Middlebury.  

It was always his dream and goal to operate a construction company and in 1955 he and his late wife, Lucy, opened Champlain Construction Company in Middlebury which he successfully managed until his death.  He could still be found in the pit daily, operating the loader.

“Buck” was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.  He enjoyed playing checkers and cribbage.

Buck is survived by his sons, Larry Danyow of Middlebury and his friend Rita Bilodeau, John Danyow and his life partner Margaret Smith of Middlebury, Jim Danyow and his wife Sonya Sorenson of Panton; grandchildren: Heidi and her husband Bill Cunningham, Lorrie, Joy and her husband Gene Pouliot, Bucky and his girlfriend Kelley Davio, Janet and her partner Brian Litchfield, James and Tiffany; daughter-in-law Carolyn Danyow and four great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Lucy (Shaw) Danyow who died March 22, 2011.

The family gratefully acknowledges the care and support given to Buck in recent years by his caregivers.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Thursday April 19, 2012 at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. William R. Beaudin, pastor, as celebrant.  Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

JAMES COONS

 

MIDDLEBURY- Addison County Sheriff James B. Coons, 59, died Monday, April 16, 2012 at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Middlebury June 11, 1952, he was the son of the late Morton A. and Bette (Galgas) Coons.  Jim was a graduate of Middlebury Union High School, class of 1970 and Champlain College, Burlington. He was a lifelong resident of Middlebury.

Jim started a successful career with the Middlebury Police Department in 1972 and served with that force for 10 years including assuming the role of Acting Chief prior to being elected Sheriff in 1982. He started serving his tenure in February 1983 as sheriff and was the longest term sheriff currently serving in that role in the State of Vermont.

He was a member of and past president of Vermont Sheriffs Association; a member and Past President of the Vermont Police Association of which he was a lifetime member; a member of the National Sheriffs Association and frequently represented law enforcement in the state legislature for the State of Vermont. Jim was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
He was a member of the Middlebury United Methodist Church and had served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Jim was a member of Bridport Morning Sun Lodge # 5 F&AM.

His passions included collecting classic muscle cars, playing guitar in various bands for more than two decades and collecting vintage guitars.

Surviving family members include his wife of 36 years, Julie (Bishop) Coons of Middlebury; two sons, Jeffrey M. Coons and his wife Rebecca of Colchester and Jeremy G. Coons of Burlington; one sister, Debra C. Bagley and her husband Roger of Middlebury; also mother-in-law Joan Bishop of N. Syracuse, NY, father-in-law Frank Bishop of Eustis, FL; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a daughter, Jennifer Beth Coons in 1983.

A memorial service was conducted on Monday, April 30, 2012  at Mead Chapel on the campus of Middlebury College.  Private burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Middlebury United Methodist Church, 47 North Pleasant St., Middlebury or to Foley Cancer Center, 160 Allen St., Rutland, VT 05701.
