Philip W. Forrest

Salisbury-Philip W. Forrest, 91, died peacefully Friday evening March 23, 2012 at the home of his daughter Melody in Salisbury who has been his caregiver for more than five years.

   He was born March 6, 1921 in Middlebury, one of 10 children born to the late Philip L. and Clara (Danyow) Forrest. He graduated from Middlebury High School and lived all his life in Middlebury.  He served in United States Air Corps during World War II and completed eight combat missions before being shot down and captured in Germany.  He was a POW in four camps for 14 months until liberated, and earned numerous medals including the Purple Heart.  

  Phil was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the V.F.W.  He was employed by F. R. Churchill and Sons retiring after 35 years of service.

    He was predeceased by his wife Lorraine Sullivan of Panton and six siblings.  He is survived by his children George Forrest and friend Mary Chapman of Starksboro, Melody Mundorf, of Salisbury and Merrie and her husband Ronald Perron, of North Ferrisburgh. Also grandchildren Kyle,Valerie and Daniel Forrest and Jesse and Jeremy Mundorf and 2 great granddaughters.  He is also survived by his brother Francis Forrest, sisters Ruth Jacobs and Teresa and brother-in-law Raymond (Budge) Churchill.

   He was a hardworking gentle man with a sparkle in his eye and was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Starksboro that he built with the help of his young son. He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

   Thanks to his special girl Laurie Ellis who took care of him from the start of his stay. Also thanks to his caregiver Norma Young and Barb Gevry.

   A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Thursday March 29, 2012   at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury, The Rev. William Beaudin as celebrant.

   In lieu of flowers contributions in Phil’s memory may be made to the Addison County Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05473 or Elderly Services, PO Box 581 of Middlebury.

Jane Louise Herrmann

Weybridge -Three days before her 91st birthday, Jane Herrmann passed away on Friday, surrounded by her devoted daughter and loving family at their home in Weybridge.  Her courage and stamina in the face of a prolonged illness was an inspiration for both family and friends.

Jane was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Samuel and Eva Bartlett on March 26, 1921.  She grew up in Roselle, New Jersey and graduated from Abraham Clark High School.After graduating from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, New Jersey during World War II, Jane enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant.  She was assigned to duty at Tripler Army Hospital on Oahu,nursing the wounded from the South PacificTheater.  Hermemorable travel to Hawaii included passage through the Panama Canal as well as enduring a typhoon crossing the Pacific.

After the war she married Kenneth Herrmann on October 25, 1947.  Their only child, Mary, was born in 1949 and they soon settled in Belle Mead, New Jersey, where she helped her husband build their home and pursued a career in nursing.  In addition to medical surgical nursing, private duty, and psychiatric nursing at The Carrier Clinic,Jane’s fondest memories were the clinical trials she helped conduct at the New Jersey Neuro-Psychiatric Institute in Skillman, New Jersey.  There, she was in charge of conducting clinical observations on new medications that were being evaluated on chronic schizophrenic patients.  On several occasions, she was invited to present at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C.

Jane is survived by her daughter Mary and husband Walter Goodale of Weybridge. She is also survived by her 3 dear grandchildren Patty Judy and husband Matt of Culpeper, VA, Mike and Heather Goodale of Bridport, and Jen and her partner Sunny of Weybridge. In addition to her nephew Frank Reusch and wife Barbara and their children, niece Lynne and husband Pat Nocera, nephew John and wife Lynnda of California, she issurvived by her dear friend Cynthia Voorhees of Millstone, New Jersey. She also leaves behind her loving pets and grand-pets: Jake, Eddie, Tucker, Max, Izzy, and Bear.  She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Ken, her parents Sam and Eva, her sister Elizabeth, her brother-in –laws Frank and Roger and her sister-in-law Edith as well as numerous close friends and her dear cousins in Maine.  
Special thanks to Addison County Home Health and Hospice for their kind help and a special thank you to Joanne Paige, hospice nurse’s aide, for her tender compassion for both Jane and her loving family.
