Carl Murray Griffin

SUDBURY— Carl Murray Griffin, age 71, died February 23, 2012, at Saratoga (NY) Hospital. Mr. Griffin was born in Rutland on September 21, 1940. He was the son of Murray and Jennie (Paine) Griffin. He received his early education in Burr Pond School and was graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1959. He served honorably in the United States Navy from 1961 until 1965. He had worked in the Chemical Dye Manufacturing business at B.A.S.F. in Rensselaer, NY for more than 25 years. He retired in 2006. He enjoyed bird watching, gardening, NASCAR and dirt track racing. Going to the Tractor Pulls at fair time was a favorite.

 Surviving is a son, John Griffin of Whitehall, NY, his brother, Calvin M. Griffin of Sudbury, 2 sisters; Lyla Stebbins of Inkster, MI and Florence M. Beauregard of Fair Haven. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him.

 The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will take place in the spring, at Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford.

 There are no public calling hours.

Deborah Jean Campbell

RUTLAND— Deborah Jean Campbell, age 57, died February 21, 2012, from injuries sustained in a hit and run incident on Lincoln Avenue in Rutland.

 Mrs. Campbell was born in Albany, NY on September 9, 1954. She was the daughter of John and Helena (Deming) Plue, Sr. She received her education in Maple Hill High School in Castleton, NY. She has been a resident of Rutland since 2007 moving here from Middlebury. She enjoyed crocheting, bingo and arts & crafts. She was a published author, her book “The Night Rape”, was published in 1989.

 Surviving is her husband; Robert Campbell of Rutland; whom she married in Middlebury on July 26, 2003, a son Grover Pangburn of Rutland and her daughter Georgia Grisby of Altoona, FL, her mother Helena Deming of Brandon and step-father Joseph Tebbetts of Brandon, 2 brothers, John Plue of Rutland and Alfred Plue of Middlebury, 3 sisters; Susan Delong of Fair Haven, Rosey Plue and Ida Plue both of Middlebury. 3 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews & cousins also survive her.

 The funeral service was held on Friday, March 2, 2012, at the Leicester Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. James Gamble, pastor of the East Charleston (VT) Church of The Nazarene officiated. A private burial followed the ceremony in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Donald James Waite

BRANDON— Donald James Waite, age 57, died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

 Mr. Waite was born in Middlebury on May 5, 1954. He was the son of Edward and Adeline (Fernette) Waite. He has been a Brandon resident all his life. He received his education in local Brandon schools and had attended Otter Valley Union High School. Mr. Waite has been a heavy equipment operator all his working life. He had worked for Joseph P. Carrara & Sons, John Russell Corp., and most recently J.D. McDonald Construction. He was a part of the crew that just completed route 7 south of Brandon. He enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid fisherman.

 Surviving is his wife; Gloria (Bruso) Waite of Brandon; whom he married in Brandon on May 5, 1988, 2 sons; Robert Waite of West Rutland and Richard Waite of Rutland, a daughter Tammy Waite of Brandon, 2brothers Robert “Bobby” Waite of Rutland and Phillip Baldwin of Brandon. 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister; Judith Narabone.

 In honoring his wishes the memorial service will be private and at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Dan C. Douglas, Sr.

BRANDON— It is with deep regret, extreme sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wonderful father; Dan C. Douglas, Sr., age 85; who passed from this world to the next, on February 28, 2012, to be with the love of his life Sophia (Zsido) Douglas, who predeceased him on February 13, 2008.

    Our dad was born in Brandon, on May 27, 1926. He was one of 11 children born to; Patrick Francis and Elizabeth “Bessie” (Grace) Douglas. He grew up in Brandon and received his education in local Brandon schools. He left home and enlisted into The United States Navy in 1943. He had served on 7 different ships throughout WW II. He had served in the Pacific Theatre and the North Atlantic, North African and Mediterranean Theater’s of Operations. One of his most memorable was serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Ticonderoga. He earned the World War II Victory Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the European Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Following his honorable discharge her returned safely home and on December 28, 1946 he married our mom Sophia A. Zsido in Proctor. He had worked in equipment maintenance and repair, for 23 years at Vermont Marble Company and over 26 years at General Electric in Rutland. He was a member and Past Commander of the Brandon American Legion Post #55. He was a 60 year member of Bristol American Legion Post #19, a 40 year member of American Legion Post #31 in Rutland and a 48 year member of V.F.W. Post #648 in Rutland. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had made many hunting trips with his sons to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota up until he was 81. He was a communicant at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon.

    Surviving is his daughter Sharon Knapp of Forestdale and her sons Alan Knapp Jr. and Bryce Knapp; a daughter, Donna Ellefson and her husband Jim of Pine Island Minn., and their children Shane and Christopher Ellefson; a son, Dan “Skip” Douglas Jr. and his wife Judy of Brandon and their daughter Danielle Douglas-Woodbury and her husband Johnny; a son, George Douglas and his wife Jenny of Brandon and their children Robin and Sarah Douglas and Christopher Booska and Missy Laraway; a son, Gary Douglas and his wife Patty of Pine Island, Minn., and their son Dan; a son, Todd Douglas and his wife Diane of Sudbury and their children Erik and Dean Douglas; a special son, Bruce Bushes of Williston; a special nephew Pat Douglas. Fourteen great-grand-children, Alexandra Knapp, Tanner Ellefson, Anna Ellefson, Mason Ellefson, Braeden Ellefson, Austin Ellefson and Landon Ellefson, Taylor Ann Stewart, Corrinne Laraway, and Tyler Laraway, Cole Booska and Dakota Booska and Caylee Rose and Jon Paul Woodbury, and a great, great granddaughter; Sophia Lee Duby also survive him. A brother Raymond “Corky” Douglas of Brandon and a sister Virginia Peletier of Richmond, a cousin; Sister Miriam Ward of Burlington and several nieces and nephews also survive as well. His was predeceased by three brothers; Patrick Douglas, Robert Douglas, and David “Mike” Douglas, two sisters; Mary Trombley and Marquerite Smith and a son-in-law, Alan Knapp Sr.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, March 5, 2012, at  at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor will be the celebrant. A private graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will follow, in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
