Howard C. Foster

MIDDLEBURY— Howard C. Foster, 92, of Middlebury passed away at his home on February 16, 2012 after a long, full life.  Howard was born April 23, 1919 in Middlebury, where he spent his entire life working the land and preserving it for future generations.

   He was the son of Theodore and Nina (Chaffee) Foster James. In 2009 he was predeceased by Helen, his loving wife of 65 years.

   Besides raising his family, Howard was active in many local and state organizations. He served on the Farm Service Agency and Dairy Marketing Committees, our local School Boards, the Addison County Regional and Middlebury Planning Commissions. He was a trustee for the Battell Woods Trust, was a member of the Farm Bureau and was a strong supporter of Addison County Field Days.

   He was a member of Middlebury Congregational Church and served on church boards.
In 2002 he was presented the Middlebury Rotary Community Service Award and in 2004 he and his brothers were inducted into the Vermont Agricultural Hall of Fame.

   Howard was local before local was popular.  Farming and agriculture were his passion.  He was the forester in the family; he loved the woods and never missed the first day of deer season for many, many years.  Many of the farm buildings have components from his small sawmill.  Howard and his brothers, Benjamin and George, formed a partnership that today is known as Foster Brothers Farm, Inc.  He was known for his green thumb and always had a beautiful, bountiful and weed-free garden which fed not only his family, but numerous others.

   He is survived by his loving children, son Robert Foster and wife Nancy and children, Heather Foster-Provencher and husband Larry and their children Tyler and Krisandra; Jennifer Foster and husband Sam Zucker and their children, Isaac and Zalman; Robin Foster-Cole and husband David and their children, Aiden and Nyna. Daughter Judy Roy and husband Bill and their children, Amanda Palmer and husband Sean and their son, Liam, and Eric Roy; son Jim Foster Sr. and wife Joyce, and their children, Karen Foster-Baccei and husband David; Jim Foster Jr. and wife Tricia and their children, MaKayla, Caleb, and Jocelyn; Mark Foster and wife Nicole and their children, Ashlynn and Colin; daughter Sharon Foster-Chalecki and husband Robert and their children Tracy Chalecki, Rob Chalecki and wife Robin and their children, Madeline and Theo; daughter Dorothy Douglas and her husband Jim and their children, Matt Douglas and wife Keri and their children Timothy and Aaron; Andrew Douglas and partner Courtney Bowers; daughter Joyce Wetmore and husband David and their children, Rebecca, Christopher, and Allyson. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Lois and Jean Foster, and many nieces and nephews.

    He was predeceased by his brothers Benjamin and George, his sister Luella Wolfreys and husband William.
The family gratefully expresses their thanks for many years of care by Addison County Home Healthcare and Hospice, Hospice Volunteer Services and Happy Hearts, Inc.

    A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Middlebury Congregational Church.

Edward John Carleton

BRANDON— Edward John Carleton, age 63, passed away; on his birthday; Thursday, February 16, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

    Ed was born in Springfield on February 16, 1949. He was the son of Michael and Jessie (Johnson) Carleton. He was an avid hunter and spent many hours tramping his favorite places in “The Woods of Vermont”. He shared a hunting camp on Fire Hill in Florence, with his closest friends, Danny, Greg, Jeff and Paul Dahlin. Ed also enjoyed his road trips with his close friend Rhodes Wyman and camping at Sawmill Heights. Ed had worked as a machinist for General Electric for many years, retiring in 2009. He served honorably in the United States Army, as a Medical Corpsman.

    He is survived by his wife; Linda (Thibault) Carleton of Brandon; whom he married in Proctor on November 27, 1976, his mother Jessie Carleton of Rutland, father-in-law Norm Thibault, brother Ken and his wife Donna, sisters; Ola Jones and her husband Ron, Bonnie Blair and her husband Wayne, sister-in-law; Sandra Thibault. Many nieces, nephews and cousins; that were the joy of his life; also survive him. He was predeceased by his father, Mike, his sister Shirley, Mother-in-law Carolyn Thibault, sister-in-law Paula Thibault and his nephew B.J. Ellison.

    In honoring his request, the memorial service will be private, at a later date.

MARY STRICHER WELDON

MIDDLEBURY— Mary Virginia Stricher Weldon , age 85, died on February 19, 2012, at Porter Hospital after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family.

   Born January 7, 1927, in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Violet (Neibling) Stricher.  She was an avid knitter and enjoyed making many hats and gloves for her family & friends.  She and her husband traveled extensively before retiring to Vermont. She worked at the New York State Psychiatric Hospital in Central Islip, New York, before making the move to Vermont. She then returned to the work force and worked at Porter Hospital in the dietary department for many years.  

   She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters Court Assumption #2009, Middlebury, VT.

   On December 19, 1943, she married her childhood sweetheart, James Weldon.  They were married for 67 years.  Together they have 6 children, Brian and his wife, Marilyn, of Holtsville, NY, Richard and his wife, Karen, of Brandon, VT, John of Holbrook, NY, Ronald and his fiance, Donna, of Medford, NY, Priscilla Weldon Hurteau and her husband, Rick, of Middlebury, VT, and Colleen Weldon Davis of Brandon, VT.  She is also survived by 14 grandchildren.  Brian, Jr, Timothy, & Jeanette (DiPaola) Weldon; James, Richard II, & Sara Weldon; John, Jr. & Kevin Weldon; Ronald, Jr. & Michael Weldon; James, Patrick, & Caitlin Hurteau, & Jessica (Davis) Bryant.  She is also survived by a sister Jackie Stricher Ferrone of Georgia and a special cousin Janyce Lauer of Montreal Canada.  She is survived by 14 great grandchildren and many nephews & nieces.  

   She was predeceased by her husband Jim, the love of her life, on September24, 2011.

   The family would like to thank the staff at Porter Hospital for their service and unending hours of care and compassion to our mother.  

   A Mass of Christian burial was held Friday, February 24, 2012 at St. Mary’s Church, College Street, Middlebury with the Rev. William R. Beaudin, pastor, as celebrant.

SHIRLEY MARGUERITE MARTIN

BRANDON— Shirley Marguerite Martin, age 88, died Thursday, February 23, 2012, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

    Mrs. Martin was born in Sudbury on November 3, 1923. She was the daughter of Charles and Flora (Dimick) Atwood. She was graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1941. On April 27, 1944 she married Thomas W. Martin in Norfolk, VA. Mr. Martin predeceased her October 13, 1988. She has been a Brandon resident since 1952 moving here from Florence. She had worked as a seamstress at the old Brandon Training School for over 25 years. She retired in 1976. She enjoyed knitting, quilting and coin collecting. She was a member of the Mayflowers Society, The Genealogical Society of Vermont, The Daughters of The American Revolution and the Vermont Society of Colonial Dames. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon and was a member of Court Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Daughter of America.

    Surviving are 4 sons; Thomas B. Martin of Enosburg Falls, Francis J. Martin of Manning, SC, Daniel L. Martin of Jonesville and Patrick M. Martin of Rutland. 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews & cousins also survive her. She was also predeceased by 2 brother Royal Atwood and John Atwood, 5 sisters; Ruth Sanderson, Della Disorda, Madge Harriman, Marion Andrus and Norma Clark and a granddaughter; Sarah Martin.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at 10 AM, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor will be the celebrant. A private graveside committal service and burial will follow, in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

   Following the ceremony the family will receive friends, at St. Mary’s Church Parish Hall, for a time of fellowship & remembrance.

    Friends may call at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon on Monday, February 27, from 4-7 PM.
