Robert F. McKnight, Sr.

NEW HAVEN— Retired game warden, Robert F. McKnight, Sr., 65, died February 13, as he lived, with dignity and stature, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.  Semper Fi- Always Faithful- is the motto of the US Marine Corp. and Bob McKnight was a Marine who exemplified that motto as a faithful husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many people in the Addison County communities in which he served.

Hundreds of local residents and law enforcement personnel have been touched through the years by Bob’s kindness and good nature which helped stockpile years of laughs and memories for all.  His love for community and hunting and fishing were passed to both his sons, who share his unending passion for wildlife and the outdoors.  He raised them to respect and obey the laws that protect wildlife and to always strive to be “a good man” in all you do. Bob approached his life and role in law enforcement much the same way.  Even those unfortunate enough to be caught by Bob enforcing the game laws benefitted from his kindness, professionalism and incessant fairness. For years Bob was against the posting of private property. He felt all land should be open to hunting with permission and he disliked posted land for the purpose of personal gain.

In November 2011, the Vermont Game Warden’s Association awarded Robert F. McKnight a lifetime membership to that organization for his years of exemplary service and lifelong commitment to improve benefits, insurance and equipment for game wardens and law enforcement statewide.  In January 2012 he was recognized with the SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD at the Yankee Sportsman’s Classic Outdoor Exposition in Essex Junction, Vt. for his career and lifelong love and dedication to Vermont’s hunting and fishing sports.

Bob was born in Springfield, Vt. Sept. 11, 1946, son of Helen (Wheeler) and Joseph McKnight of Proctorville.  Immediately after graduating from Black River High School in Ludlow in 1964, Bob and two classmates enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. Within weeks, Bob found himself attached to the 1st Infantry Battalion, 1st Marines which was one of the first units plunged into the Viet Nam conflict. Bob was awarded two purple hearts for injuries sustained in combat.

After returning home to Proctorsville in 1967, he was hired by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and began training to fulfill his dream of becoming a state warden.  Bob married Phyllis “Rory” Conway on July 15, 1967 and moved to Vergennes in 1969 where he lived and proudly served as acting Game Warden in the Addison County area for almost 35 years. Bob retired in 2001 and lived in New Haven with Rory. After retirement, Bob and Rory enjoyed attending annual North American Wildlife Enforcement Officers Association Conventions throughout North America. Bob enjoyed working on his property, putting in food plots for the wildlife, and growing huge vegetable gardens.  In the past few years he delighted giving his grandchildren rides on the tractor and playing golf at the Ralph Myre Golf Course in Middlebury where he was the course ranger.

Bob is survived by his wife, Rory McKnight of New Haven; son, James McKnight of New Haven and his fianceé, MacKenzie Hagwood of New Haven; son, Robert “Chip” McKnight and his wife, Bethany, of Orrington, ME; two grandsons, Elijah and Gideon McKnight of Orrington, ME; brother, James B. McKnight of Colchester; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Haskell of Bath, ME; and brother-in-law, John Conway of New York, NY. He was predeceased by his parents and an infant son.

A military and law enforcement funeral was held at St. Peter’s Church in Vergennes on Saturday, Feb. 18 . In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for Addison County Home Health & Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753 and the Vermont Game Wardens Association, P.O. Box 152, W. Pawlet, VT 05775.
