Celebrating Three Decades of Service Greg’s Meat Market Looks Ahead to More

Tuesday December 6, 2011

By Cookie Steponaitis

Vermonters like to measure thing in decades and centuries. Conversations between generations often include anchor points that are locations and experiences linking families over time. Located at the corner of Exchange Street and Elm Street, Greg’s Meat Market recently celebrated a special birthday and marked its thirtieth year of keeping a promise that “quality and service” come first when dealing with the families of Middlebury and Addison County.

Store owner Bart Litvin marked his second year at the helm of Greg’s Meat Market with both reflection and plans for the future. Bart came to Vermont with a diversified background in work and living experiences in the U.S. and the Northeast and was drawn to Greg’s by not only its size and location, but the commitment to customers. While he had successfully worked for and as a leader in large companies, he felt that in Vermont and especially in Greg’s, “Customers were not numbers, but faces,” and chose to make Middlebury his home.

“Greg’s is just the right size company,” shared Bart. “We are small enough to cater to the needs of the customer and large enough to be mobile and get the customers what they need.” People who frequent Greg’s are in store for the expansion in the produce, deli and bakery sections in coming months and can expect to see by mid -2012 even more offerings to choose from. “We added several new farms this year as well,” shared Bart. “This is in keeping with our commitment to featuring local produce and meats.”

Bart is equally excited to let the area folks know about the growing and expanding catering component of the services offered to the community by Greg’s Meat Market. “It is simply called Greg’s to Go,” he shared, “and it continues to increase in interest for gatherings of all sizes. People love not only the service, but the quality of the food and the local product.”

So when you come into Greg’s and see familiar faces like Paul Clement who is the head butcher and has been with the business for over twenty years, or you meet Bart himself or one of the friendly staff, remember that while changes are coming, they are based in the tradition of Greg’s where as Bart explains, “Customers program us, we don’t take orders from companies.”

Congratulations to owners Bart Litvin, Lisa Hartman and the Greg’s Meat Market family in attaining this milestone. Whether you are stopping by for fresh veggies, mouth watering sandwiches, desserts, and meals to go, the famed Greg meat freezer packages, or just to see what is up, remember you are now a part of a Vermont tradition, where generations go and recipes date back over 29 years and a tie to the community is the measuring stick of success.
