Retired Vermont Fish and Game Warden Denny Gaiotti of Whiting is among five wardens whose wacky outdoor adventures are told in the newly released book, “Vermont Wild, Adventures of Fish & Game Wardens, Volume Two,” authored by award winning writer Megan Price.
Gaiotti tells the story of chasing a young man he catches attempting to take a downed deer in the middle of the night near Cobble Road off Route 116 in Middlebury. A foot race through a swampy cow pasture and a bit of bad luck literally turns the suspect - who claims he was a track star at Otter Valley Union High School - upside down. The story will have readers in stitches. Gaiotti's "Track Star" is just one of 14 mostly true and very funny stories in the new book, which is certain to become a Vermont classic.
"Vermont Wild Volume One" rocketed to the best seller list at many independent Vermont bookstores over the 2010 and sold thousands of copies. It featured 13 stories from veteran warden Eric Nuse of Johnson, written by Price and is still selling well at bookstores and corner shops statewide.
"Vermont Wild, Volume Two" follows the same popular format and contains 14 new stories – two more from Nuse and another dozen from four other retired wardens. Along with Gaiotti, Stan Holmquist of Rochester, Richard Hislop of Fairfax and Howard Brown of Swanton also provided stories. Artist Norma Montaigne of Pittsford illustrates each of the stories.
The stories are written as if a warden is talking to readers around a campfire. The stories are enjoyed by readers of any age, from 9 to 99. Published in paperback by Pine Marten Press, Volume One and Two sell for $19.95 each at the Vermont Book Shop in Middlebury and many corner stores and can be purchased online using Paypal. Visit www.VermontWild.com to locate retail outlets, preview some of the stories.
