Karen Marie Currier

MIDDLEBURY—Karen Marie Currier, age 44, died Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

    Mrs. Currier was born in Middlebury on February 21, 1967. She was the daughter of Fredrick and Mary (Johnson) New. She graduated from Orwell Village School and attended Middlebury High School. She had worked in food service, at Mary Hogan Elementary School, Middlebury Middle School and Middlebury High School. She always said that she enjoyed, very much, cooking for the children. Each child meant a lot to her. Her flower and vegetable gardens were a great pride to her.

    She is survived by her husband Marshall Currier of Middlebury; whom she married at Mead Chapel in Middlebury on June 26, 1993, her son Michael Ryan of Charlotte, 1 daughter Ashley Currier of Middlebury, her mother Mary Orvis and her step father Peter of Ripton, her father Fred New & step mother Marty of Sudbury, 2 sisters; Tammy Johnson & her husband Dan of Brandon and Lana Travers of Brandon, 2 brothers Steven New & his wife Brenda of Ballston Spa, NY and Douglas New of Leicester, a step-sister; Tracey Abel & her husband Ken of Glenville, NY, and a step-brother; Todd Orvis of Sarasota, FL. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews & cousins, whom she loved very much, also survive her.

    The memorial service “In Celebration of Her Life” will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at 2 PM, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Margaret Fletcher, Rector at St. Thomas & Grace Episcopal Churches will officiate. The graveside committal service and burial will follow, in Pine Hill Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, November 13, from 1 PM until service time at 2 PM.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to; The American Cancer Society, Vermont Chapter, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

   Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

GEORGE LAWRENCE MARTIN

   WILLISTON— George L. Martin, 85 of Williston passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday morning November 9, 2011 after several month battle with pancreatic cancer.

   He was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 11, 1926 the son of George L. and Anabella E. (Stein) Martin.  George was appointed to the US Naval Officers Training School during World War II; he attended Middlebury College, and graduated in 1949 from LeHigh University with a degree in mechanical engineering.

   George worked at various engineering and administrative positions with Thiokol Corp. in Huntsville, AL and Elkton, MD.  He was a pioneer in the field of solid propellant rocketry, the parent of our current space development.  George also worked on many military and space programs.  

   George retired in 1984 after 36 years with Thiokol at which time he relocated to Middlebury, VT.  During his retirement he was an active volunteer with SCORE, Red Cross Blood Bank, and Porter Medical Center.  George enjoyed golfing, fishing, and gardening.  

   In 2001, George was predeceased by his first wife of 50 years Kathleen Harbin.  In 2005 He married Marilyn Johnson Dunn, formerly from So. Portland, ME, in St. Stephen’s Church in Middlebury, VT.  

   George is survived by his daughter Laura Lee Robinson and husband Joseph G. and his grandson Zachary L. Robinson of Wilmington, DE; his wife Marilyn (Dunn) Martin; stepchildren, Roger and Suzanne Dunn of Hinesburg, VT, Gayle and Albert Reid, III of Vale, NC, Dana and Kathleen Dunn of Charlotte, VT, and Dawna and Timothy Brisson of Williston, VT; step-grandchildren, Allan and Jennifer Dunn, Meghan and Jay Romano, Matthew and Kevin Dunn, Kristina and Matthew Black, Joshua, Ricci, and Olivia Reid, Scott and Elise Brisson, and by four step great-grandchildren Sophia and Brianna Romano, and Teagan and Kyra Reid.

   During the last six years George and Marilyn have enjoyed traveling and attending performances at St. Michael’s Playhouse, The Flynn Production, and Lyric Theater.

      A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington, VT.  Burial  followed in East Cemetery in Williston, VT.  In lieu of flowers contributions in George’s memory may be made to the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Rd.
