End hunger now! For thirteen year old Harper Smith, whose favorite pastimes include drawing, reading, hockey, swimming, film production and volunteering, the words are important and a cause she feels strongly about. While her family was getting groceries at the local Hannaford store she and her mom saw the contest entry form to draw designs that reflect the theme of ending hunger in Vermont and how Vermonters work to reach that goal. Inspired, Harper went home and created her vision. “I thought first about the theme of ending hunger,” explained Harper “and I began with a drawing of the state of Vermont outline, with happy and healthy children surrounding the whole border. Included were also a food pyramid and the fresh produce that Vermont is famous for.”

After submitting her entry, Harper went on with her summer plans that include volunteer work at the local library. A phone call from Molly Tarleton, who is the Regional Community Relations Specialist from Hannaford’s had the whole family very excited because of the news that Harper’s entry was selected as the winner for the state of Vermont. “I was extremely excited, but also very surprised,” shared Harper. “My mom was so proud I was too, knowing that my artwork will be on reusable bags in all 177 Hannaford stores in April of 2012. Also on the bag will be the winner from New York and the other states as well.”  While the Hannaford’s Contest might actually spur on Harper to enter other contests with her art as well, it really was important to her for the reasons of recognizing and making people think about those in Vermont who go to bed hungry and need help to have good and nutritious food to eat.
