Tigers Push To 3-0 With A Win Over Patriots

Tuesday September 20, 2011

By Marcie Bolton

Within the first few moments of the Middlebury vs. Mt. Anthony varsity football game, a non-call on a push to of bounds tackle got the ire up on some of the Tigers.  The ref’s response was, “It’s early; don’t start the game this way -he rode him all the way out.”  This seemed to quell the sidelined crowd.

Middlebury’s third win, beating the Mt. Anthony 33-12, happened on a cool September evening under the lights.  Marshall Hastings carried the ball well over 130 yards, with his ability to weave in and out; he scored the first touchdown twelve minutes into the game.

Another touchdown of the game came shortly thereafter, where Tyler Provencher kicked off and Mt. Anthony fumbled.  Hastings recovered and ran the ball for 70 yards.  The deal was cinched when the fake kick turned into a 2 point conversion with Mitchell Clark catching a pass from Provencher in the end zone.
Mitchell Clarke caught a pass and ran into the end zone for a TD, and Provencher scored for the Tigers after he rushed.

Mt. Anthony started running the ball right down the middle, which worked for them when #32, Alex Cross scored.  Mt. A had their first touchdown, even if their field goal attempt was blocked.
Hastings has another running dash when he fumbled the ball, which he quickly recovered himself.    The end of the first half it is 27-6.

The second half brought a couple of key tackles from cornerback Sam Smith, linebacker Derek Bagely, and safety Darren Desabrais.  All which helped hold the Patriots at bay.  Smith also recovered a fumble on the 17 which gave the Tigers great field position.

Hastings scored for Middlebury’s final TD with a 33 yard run down the side.

MUHS senior defenseman Joey Zeno was declared player of the Tiger’s homecoming game.
Now 3-0, Middlebury is off to a strong start for their season.  The next MUHS varsity game will be Friday, September 23, at 7 p.m.  The Tigers will play in Rutland on Alumni field.
