Barbara Eileen Wheeler

NORTH CHITTENDEN - Barbara Eileen Wheeler, age 77, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at The Pines of Rutland.

    Mrs. Wheeler was born in Chittenden on August 12, 1934. She was the daughter of Clinton and Lilly (Quinn) Wheeler. She was a graduate of Brandon High School, class of 1952. In her earlier years she had worked as a waitress and cook at The Check Mate Restaurant in Hydeville and Somewhere Restaurant in Fair Haven. She was a past member of The Fair Haven United Methodist Church. She was an avid knitter. She was well known for her quality crocheting work.

    Surviving is her husband Merritt Wheeler, Jr., of North Chittenden; whom she married May 13, 1989, 2 sons Brian Bassett of Rutland and Bradley Bassett of Middlebury, 3 daughters Sharon Butterfield of Middlebury, Karen Bassett-Wheeler of North Chittenden and Kathy Leno of Rutland, 1 brother Chris Wheeler of Beech Grove IN, 2 sisters Shirley Wheeler of Forestdale and Marilyn Wheeler-Quesnel of Rutland. 10 Grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her. She was predeceased by her first husband Burton Bassett.

    The funeral service was held on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. John McDonald, pastor of the Forestdale Wesleyan Church officiated. The graveside committal service and burial followed in the family lot, at Forestdale Cemetery.

John Walter Barnes

 

BRANDON - John Walter Barnes, age 85, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at Mountain View Center in Rutland.

    Mr. Barnes was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on January 22, 1926. He was the son of John R. and Grace (Carey) Barnes. He came to Brandon with his family when he was 2 months old. He received his education in local Brandon schools. He was a veteran of WW II and of Korea. He was honorably discharges as a Sergeant in April 1955. He had also served in the Vermont State Guard prior to entering active service in WW II. Following his honorable discharge he worked as a lineman for Tucker Construction and Central Vermont Public Service. He later worked at Newton-Thompson Wooden Toy Manufacturing Company in Forestdale. He had been a machine operator for Vermont marble Company and had run Crane as well. He assisted at Dickerman Motor City for several years. He retired at 62, but continued working for Herb Clark Sawmill and later as a driver for Maynard Auto Parts for many years. He belonged to Brandon American Legion Post #55 where he had served as Service Officer. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #3172. He was the oldest serving member of The Brandon Volunteer Fire Department, for more than 51 years.

    Surviving is a nephew Frederick York of Thatcher, AZ and 2 nieces; Cindy Baird of Garden Grove, CA and Peggy Hallinda of Cathedral City, CA, his cousin Pearl MacKissock of Brandon, with whom he had made his home. He was predeceased by 2 half-brothers Raymond Messer and Richard Messer, 2 sisters Lucille Medower and Laverne York, 3 half-sisters; Irene Bishop, Ruth Crossman and Beatrice Bishop.

    The funeral service was held on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Edward Elliott, pastor of the Rutland Church of The Nazarene officiated. Burial with military honors followed in the family lot, at Forestdale Cemetery.

    Following the ceremony the family will receive friends at The Brandon American Legion Post #55, for a time of fellowship & remembrance.

    Friends may call at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home on Friday, August 26, from 6-8 PM.
