Middlebury Union High School is this year’s recipient of the Gold Level 2011 Fit and Healthy School Wellness Award. This award commended MUHS for its "commitment to creating a healthy school environment for students and staff." As a Gold Level winner, MUHS Assistant Principal Cathy Dieman and Prevention Specialist Brooke Jette were presented with a banner and $3000 by Gov. Peter Shumlin and Deputy Health Commissioner Tracy Dolan at the Statehouse lawn in Montpelier on May 11, 2011.

This award program is co-sponsored by Action for Healthy Kids Vermont, New England Dairy & Food Council, the Vermont Departments of Health and Education, and the Vermont Education Health Initiative (VEHI). Fit & Healthy Kids is a statewide initiative to transform schools and communities into places where being active and eating healthy foods is easy, improving the overall health of Vermonters. These honors recognize schools whose policies and practices reflect a high priority on healthy outcomes for children and staff.  The award was based upon three components; nutrition, physical education program, and physical activity. The committee considered nutritious food choices, the school food service program, and other food choices at school. It also looked at the quality of the physical education program at the school, the school facilities, curriculum, and the inclusion of all students in the physical education program. Athletics and before and after school programs were also part of the criteria.
