Boys

The Vergennes American Legion Post #14 will be sponsoring two VUHS delegates to the Green Mountain Boys’ State held June 19-24 at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont: Colin Babcock and Ben Parsons.

This year the two students who were nominated along with Colin to attend were Julian Hattler and Kyle Darwin but they have previous commitments and are unable to participate. Nick Paquin was first alternate and he too was unable to attend.  Congratulations to all of them.

They were nominated by faculty and staff based on leadership, character and honesty, cooperativeness, community participation and service and scholarship.

Over seventy years ago, the American Legion of Vermont realized the importance of educating the future leaders of this state, and possibly the nation. They developed a sound program that offers these young men in-depth insight in to government, beyond that which is taught at the high school level. This program, Boys’ State, provides the opportunity to see firsthand how our government operates, and to actually participate in mock deliberations and decisions.

Girls

The Vergennes American Legion Ladies Auxiliary is also sponsoring Monica Birchmore, Tabatha Danyow, and Cara Strona, VUHS’ delegates to the Green Mountain Girls’ State held at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont for a week beginning June 19.

The purpose of Girls’ State is to provide citizenship training for girls of high school age; to afford them an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens; and to inform them about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship, in order that they may understand and participate in the functioning of their government.
