Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center Students Prove They Are “Reaching the Finish Line” at the 2011 Vermont Spring Skills USA

    Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center students from Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Culinary Arts, Diesel Power Technology, Health Careers, and Industrial Design and Fabrication demonstrated their knowledge at the annual Vermont SkillsUSA competition.  This year’s theme was “Reaching the Finish Line” and PAHCC students proved they are!    They joined students from other Career and Technical Centers at the Sheraton Inn in South Burlington on Thursday, April 7, 2011. 

    Jamie Brands, a junior at Champlain Valley Christian School in Vergennes and first year Health Careers student received a gold medal for placing first in Medical Terminology.  This skill event tests student knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations of an individual preparing for employment in the health occupations fields.

    Josh Clark, a senior from Middlebury Union High School received a silver medal and Andrew Spooner a senior from Mt. Abraham received a bronze medal in the Diesel Equipment Technology Electrical Problem Solving competition.  Students were required to identify tools, new parts, and failed parts of a diesel engine.  Students were tested on Commercial Driver’s License Pre-Trip Inspection, correctly demonstrate adjustment of a wheel bearing, and complete a written knowledge examination.

    Arie Smits, a junior at Vergennes Union High School and first year Industrial Design and Fabrication student received a silver medal in Precision Machining Technology.  This contest evaluated students in manual machining skills and tested knowledge in areas including operation of manual milling machines, lathes, drill presses, and surface grinders.  Students also demonstrated knowledge of CNC programming skills using a PC.

    Jessica Laughlin, a senior from Vergennes Union High School competed in Commercial Baking.  Within three hours, she made a Dutch Apple Pie from start to finish, made one dozen dinner rolls as well as filled puff pastry in three different shapes.  She topped it all off with decorating a cake.

    Chris Simard, a senior from Mount Abraham Union High School competed in Culinary Arts.  During a three hour allotment, he de-boned a chicken, prepared potato leek soup, and demonstrated precision knife skills in preparation, planning, and executing a well-balanced meal. 

    Dylan Lanpher and Austin Quesnel, both juniors and first year Construction Technology students from Middlebury Union High School competed in the Carpentry skills event.  Dylan and Austin were required construct a small wood structure by reading and interpreting a blueprint, correctly preparing necessary materials, with the end product properly assembled.

    Mike Sabourin and Justin Genova, both seniors at Champlain Valley Christian School in Vergennes and first year Automotive Technology students, competed in the Automotive Service Technology skills event.  Mike and Justin demonstrated written and applied standards based upon task lists authored by NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education) and ASE (Automotive Service Excellence).
