Ferrisburgh Central School Wins Farm To School Video Contest

Tuesday March 1, 2011

As the camera scanned the salad bar filled with fresh local vegetables at Hartland Elementary School, one student said, “The salad bar is healthy and awesome.”  This was a scene in one of three winning videos for The Reel Farm to School: Vermont Farm to School Video Contest. Jointly sponsored by Vermont Food Education Every Day (VT FEED) in partnership with the Orton Family Foundation, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, and Vermont Public Television, the contest invited stories from students across Vermont about how they were changing their local food systems, building support to get local and healthier school food and creating community connections. The students produced short videos highlighting school food system change.

“The students did a wonderful job showcasing the 3 C’s of Farm to School: Classroom, Cafeteria, and Community,” said Vermont FEED’s Libby McDonald. “Through the students’ creative story-telling, the videos brought to the life the power of Farm to School to improve communities’ health, education, and agricultural viability.”

Winners were announced at Farm to School Awareness Day at the Vermont Statehouse on January 20, 2011. Images of fresh food, students visiting farms, and baking in the classroom filled the Statehouse cafeteria. “Farm to School programs are demonstrating exactly what we want to see at our schools,” said Commissioner of Education, Armando Vilaseca. “Hands-on applied learning that results in improved health.”

Entries were judged for creativity, relevance to the theme, and technical quality. The winners were Hartland Elementary School, Randolph Elementary School and Ferrisburgh Central School, with Ferrisburgh taking home the grand prize. Each team won $200, an insider tour on Vermont Public Television and their video promoted on Vermont Public Television. As grand prize winners, Ferrisburgh Central School also received a flip video camera. All the winning videos can be seen on Vermont FEED’s website: www.vtfeed.org.
