Ann Reba Broughton

MIDDLEBURY - Ann Reba Broughton, age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 11, 2011, at her home surrounded by family and friends, following a prolonged illness.

    Ann was born in Cornwall on August 23, 1934; she lived in, and loved Addison County all her life. She retired from Middlebury College after 31 years, where she enjoyed the interaction with the faculty, students and friends she made there. Ann was a long time league bowler. She loved square dancing and playing cards with friends. She was a veracious reader throughout her life.

    She was predeceased by her daughter and best friend, Barbara Towne of Middlebury. She leaves behind two sons; Michael Broughton & his wife Mary Jane of Bristol, and Steven Broughton & his wife Valerie of Poultney, also an “adopted” son, Joseph Ekroos of Bristol and daughter-in-law, Susan Button of Middlebury, her mother Lucille James of Claremont, NH, two brothers, Ronald Oliver & his wife Priscilla of Ithaca, NY and Eugene Oliver & his wife Mary Ann of Lakeland, FL, a sister Linda Upton & her husband Bryan of Hartland, two grandsons, Benjamin Broughton of Middlebury and Loyal Broughton of Colorado Springs, CO. Several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive her.

    Ann and her family extend heartfelt thanks to the special personal care received from Addison County Home Health & Hospice, Dr. Diana Barnard, “Dinners with Love” and “Meals on Wheels”.

    At Ann’s request, there will be no memorial service. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to; Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Gilbert Truman Austin

 

BRANDON - Gilbert Truman Austin, age 81, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at his home in Brandon.

    Mr. Austin was born in Brandon on August 2, 1929. He was the son of John and Maidie (Fuller) Austin. He grew up in Brandon and received his education in local Brandon schools. Following high school he joined the United States Navy and served in Guantanamo Bay Cuba. Upon his honorable discharge in 1950, he returned to Waterbury, CT and work in a local mill. He returned to Vermont and work at Brown’s Novelty in East Middlebury for several years. He joined the staff at the Brandon Training School for several years. He retired from White Pigment in Florence in 1996 following more than 27 years of service. He enjoyed motorcycle riding.

    Surviving is his wife June Wetmore Austin of Brandon; whom he married in Brandon on June 23, 1956, a daughter Cheryl Berry of Mendon and 1 son Brian Austin of Roswell, NM, 2 sisters Evelyn Nickerson of Brandon and Janet Lamoureux of Shoreham. 2 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by 2 brothers Raymond Austin and Gerald Austin.

    The graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date, in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory to; The Brandon Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon, VT 05733.

Susan Hattie Pickens

 

BRANDON - Susan Hattie Pickens, age 74, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Haven Manor in Rutland.

    Mrs. Pickens was born in Orange, NH on March 6, 1936. She was the daughter of Daniel and Laura (Dorr) Eastman. She received her early education in Orange & Canaan, NH schools. In her earlier years she had worked in the housekeeping department at Hanover Hospital. She came with her family to Brandon in 1966 moving from Plainfield, NH. March 3, 1969 she married Lee Pickens in Brandon. Mr. Pickens predeceased her July 22, 1989. She enjoyed reading, gardening and crocheting.

    Surviving is her only son Steven Allen Eastman of Leicester, 1 brother Archie Eastman of Las Vegas, NV. 2 grandsons, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a large extended family also survive her.

    The funeral service was held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church officiated. Entombment followed the service at Pine Hill Cemetery Receiving Vault, where the graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date.
