Fashion Corner Enters 26th Year Port Henry Bridal and Formal Wear
Credits Loyal Customers With Helping Them to Withstand Recession and Loss of Bridge

Tuesday February 15, 2011

By Mike Cameron

Natalie Clark knew when the Champlain Bridge was closed in October of 2009 that it would ultimately  impact her business negatively.  Then came word that the bridge would not only be closed permanently, it would be destroyed completely.  That happened on December 28th, 2009.  Fast forward to February 2011.  Natalie and her staff have withstood the test of recessionary times and a new bridge is being built. It should be completed by early October this year.

The bridge might be a worthy metaphor for her business of 25 plus years.  Where by the bridge connects both sides of the lake in so many ways, The Fashion Corner has been connecting customers with the latest fashion trends in bridal and formal wear.

Natalie and her husband, Allen, took over the existing business in 1992.  “I remember when we went to our first buying trip to New York City.  We were in the garment district and attended a fashion show to look over what was available that year.  We decided to rate  the models coming down the runway  by what they were wearing and how the presentation looked on a scale of one to ten. We decided to buy only the “tens” for our store.” That experience worked well for us, and allowed us to make better and more popular choices. Since then Natalie has been able to cultivate many contacts in the fashion business.

Today the store, still located in Port Henry, remains a favorite spot for bridal and prom customers from all over.  “We have customers from Canada, across both up-state and downstate New York and Vermont.  A large segment of Vermont customers have remained loyal in spite of the bridge situation.  The 24-7 ferry service has helped and seeing the new bridge developing, every day is also important.

“Presently we have over 500 prom dresses, wedding dresses and tuxedos in stock .”  This allows us to create that very special look for that special event” she explained.

Natalie is a combination of determination and enthusiasm.  It isn't difficult to understand why her business has remained successful even during stressful economic times.  Asked how she has maintained her business  in the eastern Adirondack community which has been severely impacted by major transportation issues, she doesn't miss a beat.

I have to spend money on advertising to let people know that we are open, have an excellent in stock inventory and continue to have excellent contacts for inventory. We stress that there is free ferry service available to Port Henry for those customers traveling from Vermont. The ferry operates 24/7.”

“In the end,  word of mouth is our best advertising. It brings back repeat customers.  Many of our customers go back 25 years.  some started with us as Little Miss Sweet Heart's in grade school, 6 and 7year olds, and now are grown adults bring their own daughters in for wedding dresses  and prom gowns” says Natalie.

“We've doubled our size since the beginning and continue to learn about what customers are looking for by listening to their needs.”  Buying a wedding gown is a very special occasion for the bride to be, the same is true of a prom gown, tux or mother-of-the-bride dress.”

The prom gown market,  unique to itself requires specialized attention.  “The decision to purchase a prom dress is as individual as the young person who is purchasing.  The Fashion Corner staff will assist in every way they can  in making this important decision.

Our family-like atmosphere allows   our excellent staff, Jeanne and Candy, to work with the customers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Natalie praises  her staff and her husband Allen who have been very helpful and supportive.

Asked if she can see some light at the end of the tunnel as the economic climate begins to improve nationally, Natalie says:  “We think it is getting better, and hopefully it will continue.  What keeps her interested is seeing those brighter days come about?

Natalie said “I enjoy looking at that beautiful surprise when he sees her for the first time in her bridal gown.  You will never see that expression again.  It's one of a kind and very, very special.”

That special expression is what they strive for every day at The Fashion Corner in Port Henry New York.
The Fashion Corner is located at 4325 Main Street in the Village of Port Henry New York.  Their telephone number is (518) 546-7499.
