Ann R. McGrath

Ann R. McGrath took her leave of this earth to be with her savior on December 31, 2010 after a nine year battle with breast cancer.

Born December 30, 1947 in Rutland, Vermont Ann ( Riley) McGrath met soul mate and future husband Larney on the school bus when she was twelve. Larney left for the military and the two were brought back together Ann’s senior year of high school. After two weeks of dating, the pair was married on Saturday, January 22, 1966 and were inseparable for forty-four years of marriage.

The couple moved twenty-five times in the first twenty-three years of marriage and in the support of Larney’s military service in the Air Force and for his country.  Larney McGrath II was born on May 7, 1976 and passed away on the same day. Two years later, on November 7, 1978, God gave Larney and Ann twin sons James and Larry.  Intensely devoted her husband, her family and her faith, Ann was involved in all the communities they lived in, but especially in Vergennes, where the family settled in 1986.

In addition to serving her church and being one of the founding members of Sweet Charity, Ann served as a member of the VUES School Board and District School Board since 1995 and held the position of VUES School Board Chairperson for thirteen years. Known to all for her openness, honesty and tenacity in the face of any adversity, Ann only stepped down from her duties this March when her health forced her not to be able to continue. Over a thousand local children have benefitted from her planning, foresight and belief in each as an individual.

Ann is survived by her husband of forty-four years Larney McGrath; her son James and Catherine McGrath and grandchildren Devyn-10, Cody-5 and Hayden-2 of Winooski, her son Larry McGrath and his fiancée Lisa Dean, of Franklin, Tennessee and her sister Mary Ellen Peer of Brandon, Vermont. She was predeceased by her brother Winston Riley, her newborn son Larney II and her parents.

Donations in her name may be made to the Susan Koman Breast Cancer Foundation. The family wishes to thank Little City Family Practice, Dr. Nunnik and his staff, Porter Rehabilitation and Hospice, Victory Baptist Church and Ann’s friends for their prayers, support and love. When you think of Ann, smile and remember, Psalms 37: 4  Delight thyself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
