Elaine Marie Farrell

MIDDLEBURY - Elaine Marie Farrell, age 82, died Friday, December 3, 2010, at her home in Middlebury.

     Mrs. Farrell was born in Shoreham on May 14, 1928. She was the daughter of Allan and Evelyn (Cannon) Drolette. She grew up in Cornwall close to her grandparent’s family farm. She graduated from Middlebury High School, Class of 1945. Following her mother’s career path, she received her R.N. from DeGoesbriand Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1949. After graduation she had worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manchester, NH for several years, later returning to Middlebury and working at Porter Hospital. She married James L. Farrell of Middlebury on August 23, 1958.Mrs. Farrell has been a Middlebury resident for over 52 years.  After her children had grown she worked in the Farrell family business; Farrell’s Men’s Shop with her husband until their retirement in 1990. She and her husband spent winters in Tucson, AZ, close to their daughter and grandchildren, since 1994. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Porter Hospital Auxiliary, and Round Robin Thrift Shop. She enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends in Middlebury and in Tucson. She loved her family and friends dearly and supported them in many ways.

    Elaine Farrell was the mother of 3 children, Joan, Brian and Timothy and the grandmother to six; Lindsay and Ross, Fiona and Colin, and Aaron and Jared. Her husband James L. Farrell predeceased her on April 14, 2002.

    A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at 11 AM, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. The Rev. William Beaudin, pastor will be the celebrant. A graveside committal service and burial will take place in the family lot, at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to: Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

John Thomas Kerr

 

FORESTDALE - John Thomas Kerr, age 81 died Wednesday, December 8,  2010 at his home in Forestdale.

    John was born  June 2, 1929 in Manhatten, NY to Harry and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Kerr. He spent his early years in Peekskill, NY and graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School later attending Emerson College in Boston, Mass

    In 1947 John joined the Marine Corps Reserve and later served active duty in the Korean conflict earnng the rank of S/Sgt . After discharge in 1959 he attended NY University

    On June 27. 1953 he married Mary V Callahan  He began working for the F W Woolworth Co in NY City as a management trainee and later for Sperry & Hutchinson (S & H Stamps)   He still owns and  for a time published the Green Mountain Real Estate paper. He later became a rural letter carrier in Brandon for over 20 years and also worked  for the Brandon Town School district as a part time custodian He also worked for the Brandon Training School in Brandon.

    John was very active in Scouting. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 208 in the Bronx and later as Cubmaster of Pack 123 in Brandon,  His civil service continued as a charter member of the Brandon/Forestdale Lions Club serving as President and later Tamer.  He also served on the parish council of St Monica's Church in Forestdale and St Mary's Church in Brandon.  He received the Melvin Jones award in 2002.  John was also a member of the American legion Post # 55 in Brandon.  He was instrumental in forming the Liberty program at Marshall school sponsored by the Lions Club

    He is survivied by his wife of 57 years, Mary, sons Thomas J and Donna Kerr of Ripton, Robert K "Bobie" and companion Jackie Foley of Leicester, Timothy P Kerr of Brandon . 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren

    A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at St Mary's Church in Brandon with Father Albert "Skip" Baltz officiating.  Burial with military honors followed the service in St Mary's Cemetery. Following the graveside services a reception was held at the American Legion Post # 55 in Brandon

    Memorial remembrances may be sent to Rutland Area Visiting Nurses and Hospice, for supplies at 7 Albert Cree Dr, Rutland Vt 05701 and/or to the Brandon Area Rescue Service, Box 232 Brandon, VT 05733

Philip Ernest Mills

 

BRANDON - Philip Ernest Mills, age 82, died Thursday, December 9, 2010, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

    Mr. Mills was born in Randolph on February 6, 1928. He was the son of Leon and Hattie (Packard) Mills. He grew up in Rochester where he received his early education and was graduated from Rochester High School, class of 1946. In his earlier years he had worked as a lumber grader at Eaton Hardwood Co, in Newcomb, NY. He entered the United States Army in October 1950 and served in Korea. Included in his numerous military decorations are the Purple Heart, for wounds received in the battle of Chorwon and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Following his honorable discharge in 1952 he returned home and worked as a meat cutter for several years. Mr. Mills retired from Central Vermont Public Service in 1990, following 33 years of service. He has been a resident of Brandon since 1988, moving here from Middlebury. He enjoyed gardening and hiking and loved his daily walk in his Mount Pleasant neighborhood.

    Surviving is his wife Helen (Jennings) Mills of Brandon; whom he married in Arlington, VT on May 1, 1954, a daughter Jane Pinson of Brandon, 2 sons Gary Mills of Brandon and Michael Mills of New Haven, 2 sisters Arlene Newell of Rochester and Janet Stettler of Lebanon, NH, 3 brothers Gordon Mills and Richard Mills of Rochester and Earl Mills of Alexandria, NH. 7 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by a brother Willard Mills.

    The memorial service “In Celebration of His Life” will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at 2 PM at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. Gary Stanley, a family friend will officiate. The graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date, in The Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph.

    Following the ceremony the family will receive friends at Brandon American Legion Post #55, for a time of fellowship & remembrance.
