James Edward Dewire, Jr

BRANDON - James Edward Dewire, Jr, age 78, died Monday, November 22, 2010 at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

    Mr. Dewire was born in Saranac Lake, NY on April 23, 1932. He was the son of James and Mary (Plumley) Dewire, Sr. He has been a resident of Brandon since 2000 moving here from Clearwater, FL.

    Surviving is a half brother, Eugene Eber of Trenton, FL and his care provider Helen Cram of Brandon.

    A private funeral service will be held at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon, at a later date. A private burial, with military honors, will take place in Forestdale Cemetery.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to; The Brandon Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon, VT 05733.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Deborah Ann Slayton

 

FORESTDALE - Deborah Ann Slayton, age 49, died Friday, November 19, 2010, at her home in Forestdale.

    Ms. Slayton was born in Middlebury on December 7, 1960. She was the daughter of Kenneth and Alice (Howard) Cram. She grew up in Brattleboro and was graduated from Brattleboro High School, Class of 1989. She had worked as a cashier for Buffum’s Market for several years before moving to Brandon. She was forced to retire due to ill health in 1997. She was an avid deer hunter and loved to fish. She enjoyed horseback riding and spending time with family and friends.

    Surviving is her partner-in-life; Leslie Johnson of Forestdale, 2 daughters Christina Danley of Palmer, MA, Jennifer Ann Ryea and a son Dwight Alan Slayton, Jr, both of Forestdale, a stepbrother James Aunchmoody of Vernon and 1 sister Crystal Sears of Leicester Junction. 4 grandchildren and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her.

    The memorial service “In Celebration of Her Life” was held on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. John McDonald, pastor of the Forestdale Wesleyan Church officiated. A private burial will take place, in Cook Cemetery in Ripton, at a later date.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to; The Rutland County Visiting Nurse & Hospice, 7 Albert Cree Drive, Rutland, VT 05701.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Francis Herbert “Herbie” Hanfield

BRANDON - Francis Herbert “Herbie” Hanfield, age 70, died Saturday, November 20, 2010, at his home in Brandon.

    Mr. Hanfield was born in Proctor on January 18, 1940. He was the son of Raymond and Gertrude (Pulling) Hanfield. He received his education in Brandon schools. In his earlier years he had worked the family farm. He joined the United States Army and served in France for more than 28 months. Following his honorable discharge in 1966 he returned home and work at Newton-Thompson Wooden Toy Manufacturing in Forestdale. He later drove truck for Leonard D’Avignon and later A. G. Ryan Trucking. He was employed by the Town of Brandon Road Department for over 20 years, retiring in 2004. He had also worked for the Town of Leicester as a Grader Operator. His passion was his model railroad building. He enjoyed placing and operating his trains on the lawn in the summer, for people to admire. He was a member of The Brandon American Legion Post #55.

    Survivors include 4 sisters; Gladys M. Ricketts of Chittenden, Velma E. Blodgette of Wilder, Edna A. Kerr of East Corinth, and Sudona “Sudsy” Hanfield of Leicester, 4 brothers Donald R. Hanfield and Lewis J. Hanfield both of Shoreham, Russell P. Hanfield of Rutland, William B. Hanfield of Brandon, and his companion Norma Smith of Brandon. Many nieces, nephews & cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents and 3 sisters; Martha Hanfield, Pauline Emmons and Thelma Savela.

    The funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, followed in Pine Hill Cemetery.

    Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory to; The Brandon Area Rescue squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon, VT 05733 or to The Rutland County Humane Society, 765 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
