Eleanore Blair LaFave

Vergennes- Eleanore Blair LaFave, 69 passed away Sunday November 14, 2010 at her home in Vergennes.

         She was born May 20, 1941 in Vergennes the daughter of Carroll and Juanita Porter Blair.

         Ellie graduated from Vergennes High School class of 1959. After graduating she attended Henry W Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington graduating in 1960 as Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at Mary Fletcher Hospital in the operating rooms. Ellie married Larry E LaFave February 20, 1961 and moved to Middlebury. In 1970 they moved to Pioneer Auto Sales in Leicester living and raising her two sons. She developed a strong love for used cars after 20 plus years her and husband moved to Vergennes. Still with the love of used cars she and her son Scott bought Vergennes Auto, making a strong come back on a slow business.

      Predeceased by her husband Larry E LaFave in 2002, a brother Willard Blair in 2003.

      Ellie is survived by two sons Brent Blair LaFave and wife Kim of Salisbury; Scott LaFave of Vergennes; four grandchildren, Justin, Samantha, Shauna, Hartley; three great grandchildren Matthew, Christopher, and Chandler; a cousin Kimberly Porter of New Haven; several nieces, nephews and friends.

     Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday Nov 22nd at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes. Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes on Monday from 1 p.m. up to the hour of the funeral. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 55 Day lane, Williston, VT 05495-1460.

Sheldon Albert Woodward

FORESTDALE - Sheldon Albert Woodward, age 81, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at his home in Forestdale.

     Mr. Woodward was born in Rumney, NH on July 12, 1929. He was the son of Harold and Hattie (Boswell) Woodward. He was graduated from Plymouth, (NH) High School, class of 1947. In his earlier years he had worked as a Contract Logging Manager for S.A. Woodward in Quincy, NH. He served in The United States Army with the 196 th. Artillery Group, in Korea. Following his honorable discharge he returned home to work as a Sawyer in a local mill. His love for horses moved him and his family to Pittsford, VT in 1961 and to Brandon in 1964. He was a Professional Ferrier and had cared for race horses at Saratoga, NY, Hinsdale, NH Race Course and Pownal, VT race track. He also served numerous private clients in the area for many years. His passion was working at the Morgan Horse Farm in Middlebury for U.V.M. He retired in 1997 and spent many hours working in his large garden. He enjoyed visiting with folks who stopped to admire his gardening talents. His love for children led him to helping with the Boy Scouts of America on camping trips. He enjoyed reading poetry by Robert Frost.

    Surviving is his wife Mae Woodward of Forestdale; whom he married in Hebron, NH on June 12, 1955, his daughter Cynthia Ghosh of Bennington and son Sheldon “Butch” Woodward, Jr of Hayden, CO, a brother Carl Woodward of Lebanon, NH and 2 sisters Margaret Goodwin of Quincy, NH and Betty Morin of Laconia, NH, 4 grandchildren; Ashim, Sumita, Takoma and Shawnee. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by 3 sisters; Arlene Person, Barbara Woodward and Ethel Woodward.

    The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will take place on Monday, November 22, 2010, at 10 AM, at Forestdale Cemetery. Mr. Bertram Coolidge, a family friend will officiate.
There are no public calling hours.

    Memorial gifts may be made, in his memory to; Rutland County Home Health & Hospice, 7 Albert Cree Drive, Rutland, VT 05701, or to a charity of one’s choice.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Pearl Esther Hayes

FORESTDALE - Pearl Esther Hayes, age 91, died Thursday, November 18, 2010, at her home in Forestdale.

    Mrs. Hayes was born in Guilford, Maine on March 15, 1919. She was the daughter of Rev. George and Olive (Jackson) Chambers. She moved with her family to Ira in 1924 and later to Brandon. She received her education in Ira and Brandon schools. She had worked as the Supervisor of K building at the old Brandon Training School, for many years. She retired in 1981. She enjoyed baby sitting and spending time with her family. She was a member of The Forestdale Wesleyan Church.

    Surviving are 3 sons Ronald L. Hayes and his wife Carolyn and Richard G. Hayes and his wife Marie all of Brandon, David B. Hayes and his wife Sharon of Westminster, MA. 10 Grandchildren, many Great Grandchildren and several Great, Great Grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her. She was predeceased by a son Kenneth Hayes, 2 brothers Floyd Chambers and Rev. Clifford Chambers and 3 sisters Ruby Libby, Ruth Wolfe and Olive Chambers.

    The funeral service were held on Sunday, November 21, 2010, at the Forestdale Wesleyan Church. The Rev. John McDonald, pastor and Mr. Bertram Coolidge co-officiated. The graveside committal service and burial  followed, in the family lot, at Forestdale Cemetery.

Dr. Ralph John Carbo, Jr.

SALISBURY - Dr. Ralph John Carbo, Jr, “Pop-a-Doc”, age 89, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at his home in Salisbury, surrounded by his loving family.

    Dr. Carbo was born in Washington, DC on July 6, 1921. He was the son of Dr. Ralph John Carbo, Sr and Claudia Louise (Lieutaud) Carbo. He was graduated from Gonzaga High School, class of 1939. Following graduation her served in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge he attended Georgetown University and received his degree and medical license in 1947. Dr. Carbo was a practicing Ophthalmologist, until his part time retirement and full time move to Lake Dunmore in 1976. While living in the Washington, DC area, Dr. Carbo was a member of the Knights of Columbus, The Maryland Crime Investigating Committee; The Royal Society of Medicine, London, NRA and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a proud member of the Washington Figure Skating Club and the US Figure Skating Association, and was a member of the original Ice Follies. Dr. Carbo was also courtesy staff at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Springs, MD and The Washington Adventist Hospital while owning his own Ophthalmology practice in Rockville, MD. A lifetime love of photography and the arts led to many years of work with the Washington National Ballet Company, The Montgomery County (MD) Ballet Company and the Burlington Ballet Company, as well as many local schools including; Mt. Abe, MUHS, OVUHS, Castleton State and Middlebury College, as well as Town Hall Theater of Middlebury and the Middlebury Community Players. Dr. Carbo was very active in his Vermont Community beginning in 1939 when he fell in love with Vermont, by way of Camp Keewaydin, where he was a Junior Counselor. He work continued there until his full retirement from Camp Keewaydin and the Keek Program in 2004. He was a member of the Associated Photographer International, D.A.V., The Smithsonian Institute, The National Trust for Historic Preservation and a proud supporter and partner of the Special Olympics. He was also the proprietor of Jen-Ral Productions and worked with VPT and the Middlebury College Television Station. In the words of his mother, “Etc, Etc, Etc. can only begin to tell the tale”.

    Surviving is his sister Claudia Louise Carbo Lockard of Annapolis, MD, 2 sons Gregory Michael John Carbo of Richmond, VA and Mark Anthony Carbo of Sebring, FL, his daughter and care provider Mary Renee Arlette Hendricks and husband Robert of Salisbury, Granddaughters Pamyla Carbo-Hendricks of Salisbury and Lynda Kendall and her husband Charlie of Indiana and grandson Shane Anthony Carbo of NY. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and great grandchildren also survive him. The family would like to thank Addison County Home Health and Hospice with special appreciation to; Stephanie Stoddard and Cheryl Morrison for all their help.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at 10 AM, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor will be the celebrant. Following the mass the family will receive friends, in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, for a time of fellowship & remembrance.

    A private graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, will take place, at a later date, in The Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph.

    In lieu of flowers memorial gifts in his memory may be made to one of Dr. Carbo’s passions; Shard Villa, Shard Villa Rd, Salisbury, VT 05769, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Building Fund, 38 Carver St. Brandon, VT 05733 or to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Robert Leonard Maheu

Middlebury - Robert Leonard Maheu, of Middlebury, Vermont died November 15, 2010.

    Bob was born in Middlebury on October 31, 1975, son of Gary Maheu and Shari (formerly Maheu) Charron. He is survived by his parents and his sisters, Ashli DeMayo and Julie Maheu and his many friends. A celebration of his life was held at his home where he died in Middlebury on Saturday November 20th.
