IRENE CAROLINE LAVOIE

New Haven - Irene Caroline Lavoie 101, passed away on October 3, 2010.

She was born May 20, 1909, the daughter of Joseph and Wilamina (Belanger) Duford in a suburb of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.

At the age of two she moved with her large family to Lyndonville, VT. At age 14 she was doing housework for four area families. When she was 18, she began working for a Mrs. Chase, making maple candy, a job she held for 7 years.

She married Anthony Joseph Lavoie in 1934, living in Kingston, Whitman, and Brocton, MA, and giving birth to 5 children, one of whom died when only 5 days old. In 1946 they moved to a farm in Shoreham, VT., which they bought using war bonds. After 13 years on the farm, they moved to Shoreham village, and both Tony and Irene worked in the Apple Packing Co-op there. Irene retired at age 65 but continued an active life, enjoying her 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Always an excellent cook, she took pride in her soups, cakes, pies and donuts, as well as knitting, crocheting and other needlework. After her husband died, she moved to Middlebury, VT., eventually settling at The Commons, an elderly housing complex. She began going to the Elderly Services Project Independence, a day facility. She was delighted to be able to go there to "help the old folks", she was to say when she was well into her 90's. While there, she put many a younger person to shame with her Scrabble abilities, invariably winning the match. As she approached 100, she lived for a time with her granddaughter Michelle Gorton in New Haven, and then moved to live with Linda Roscoe in Bristol, VT. Irene kept a positive attitude, never drank or smoked, worked hard and stayed physically active throughout her long life.

Irene is survived by her son Gerard Lavoie, of Vergennes, VT; daughter Marguerite of Burlington, VT; son Leo Lavoie of Bethlehem, NH, daughter-in-law Frances Lavoie of Littleton, NH, 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Anthony, infant daughter Maria, and daughter Mary.
Graveside services were held On Tuesday October 5, 2010  in St. Genevieve Cemetery in Shoreham. The Rev. Skip Baltz of St. Mary’s Church, Brandon officiated.

Contributions may be made to Elderly Services, PO Box 581, Middlebury, VT 05753.
