Joyce Easter Meacham

MIDDLEBURY - Joyce Easter Meacham, age 78, died Friday, September 17, 2010 at Fletcher Allen health Care in Burlington.

    Joyce was born in Boston, MA on Easter Sunday; March 27, 1932. She was the daughter of William Maxfield and Rena Mae (Mack) Meacham. She received her early education at the Farm & Trades School on Thompson’s Island, Boston (an all-boys school) where her father was Headmaster. Later she attended Tenacre School and graduated from Dana Hall-both in Wellesley, MA. As a 1953 graduate of Middlebury College, she majored in English Literature and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Her early careers included public relation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in Cambridge, MA, assistant editor of the Rockbridge County News in Lexington, VA, and public relations at the then Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, VT. Joyce’s later employment years were spent as a Vermont State Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist, in Addison and Northeast Rutland Counties where she originated and coordinated varied substance abuse prevention programs, for youth as well as delivering workshops to school personnel, parents and community individuals. Following her retirement from State of Vermont, she continued her endeavors with substance prevention by developing and overseeing Federal Drug Prevention Grants in the six Addison Northeast schools. Joyce was a former board member of Elderly Services, Inc., and of the Addison County Court Diversion Program. She was an active member of the Addison County Long Term Care’s Coalition, the Addison County Human Services Council and Addison County Court Diversion Review Team and spent many hours volunteering with Pug Rescue of New England (PRoNE). A direct descendent of Mary Dyer, Joyce had an opinion on most issues but especially of politics and the Boston Red Sox.

    Joyce leaves a brother, William Meacham of Lexington, VA, several nieces, a nephew and cousins and her beloved black Pug, Lady Daphne. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother Linwood.

    The graveside committal service and burial will be held on Sunday, October 10, 2010, at 1:30 PM at West Side Cemetery in Salisbury. The Rev. Lucy Pelligrini, Chaplain at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury, will officiate.

    Memorial gifts in lieu o flowers may be made, in her memory, to PRoNE, c/o Doris Aldrich, 17 Jones Road, Pelham, MA 01002-9715 or to Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, 1 Mill St, Burlington, VT 05401.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
