Every summer, as the halls of VUHS empty out, a new sound can be heard through the corridors. Gathering from around the state, cheerleaders from middle school, junior varsity and high school come annually to VUHS to participate in a cheerleading camp sponsored by National Cheerleaders Association. Working in pairs and as teams, the cheerleaders learn the latest in tumbling, dancing, cheers, partner stunting and crowd oriented cheers. Each cheerleading team comes to these camps to be taught by some of the top college cheerleaders in the nation, who serve as the instructors for the program.

VUHS cheerleading programs are well known around the state and each year more and more young cheerleaders join the programs at the three elementary schools, the middle school and compete for spots on the four time state champion varsity squad. Each summer, the cheerleaders look forward to summer camp and summer training as a time to connect not only with the younger cheerleaders in the camp, but to see the latest and greatest techniques in the ever changing sport of cheerleading.

Part of the week long camp atmosphere is an optional competition for the status of All-American cheerleader. The qualifications for this honor are rigorous and only the best earn the honor. At the end of the week long summer camp, VUHS Varsity cheerleaders had the honor of having four new All-Americans; senior: Katie Viau, senior: Jennifer Cunningham, sophomore: Capricia Burbo, and sophomore Cynthia Hollar and a new trip on the horizon. The girls will be traveling to New York City to be a part of the NCA All-American Dance and Cheer Squad that will perform at the 84th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition to this honor, the girls will stay six nights in New York City, tour the State of Liberty, Empire State Building, and will see Broadway shows and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes. They will have a dance class with one of New York’s most noted choreographers and will be a part of the Macy’s Day Parade itself.

While the teens are excited about the honor, they have already begun the task of raising the $ 1,700.00 per person to pay for the trip. With a full schedule of activities and fundraisers, the VUHS All-Americans would like to encourage anyone interested to contact them about any of their events and planning.
