AWESOME weekend and not only because the weather was fantastic but rather the Vergennes Rowing team dominated in their rowing competition on Saturday at Button Bay. Competing in the 10th annual Spring Wave sponsored by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum the Vergennes teams competed with eight other schools to claim bragging rights of who has the best rowing team in the region. Without missing a beat it’s Vergennes! With many new rowers joining the spring season (14) Vergennes was able to enter three boats for competition. The middle school team and first time rowers, Stephanie Anderson, Kim Eno, Mariah West and Anthony Woods with coxswain sophomore Chelsea Ross won the mile and half mile races in their division, taking first place in the novice 4 division. Also new rowers Jerimiah Delorme, Silas Smith, Keegan Bosworth, Rachel Clark, Emily Paterson with sophomore Kelsey Dobson as stroke oar and Dale Eriksen as coxswain finished first in their mile and third in their half mile races, giving them third place overall in the novice 6 division. The varsity team missing two of its strongest rowers, Jesse Bunde and Robert Burbo, due to previous commitments, the team readjusted itself and fielded the team of Co-Capatains Jarrett Clark and Ethan Baldwin, Max Campano, Dale Eriksen, Dan Averill and Alex Hulfish with coxswain Chelsea Ross. The VUHS raced against schools from as far away as North Haven, Maine and New Haven, Connecticut. The VUHS won the mile race finishing 15 seconds ahead of the next boat. In the half mile race it was a lot closer with all three boats almost tied going into the final 150 yards. The Vergennes team gathered what last of the energies they had and proceed to “power stroke” the final distance and pulled head by over two boat lengths to seal the victory. Congratulations to all for an excellent spring season!!!!!!!
