We all have memories of our high school prom. Even today we can remember details about who were there, what decorations were in place and the music and events of the evening. For many of us, we have photos to document the event and even have saved souvenirs of the evening such as ticket stubs or glassware.

Over the years, proms have grown from local events into big business across the state and Champlain Valley. While traditionally held on the school grounds, and the result of months of planning and at least a week long of decoration, most Proms today are held off school grounds in local resorts, hotels, Opera Houses or civic organizations locations that are rented. Proms are now hosted by the Junior Class or sometimes the Senior Class of each school and guests range in age from just seniors and juniors to the entire high school and post-graduates.

On Saturday, May 15th the VUHS Junior Class presented the 2010 Prom at Basin Harbor Club in Ferrisburgh and danced the night away to the sounds of DJ Charlie. With stars, murals depicting the fading light of a night sky and dresses and tuxes in every hue and color imaginable, the 130 in attendance were a part of this age old tradition and right of passage in high school. Present were parents, teachers and chaperones who spanned thirty years of prom attendance at VUHS, and who found themselves wondering when it became less popular to decorate the school gym. Many remarked about the twenty-foot ceilings of crepe paper and the fountains, lighted chandeliers and waterfalls that were often a part of the Prom experience.

While the adults had a great time reminiscing about proms of the past, the Class of 2010 added to their own memories a collection of images, feelings and photos documenting both a night under the stars and a night to remember. While things do change, one thing remains set and the same. Proms are more than a dance. They are a milestone in the pathway of high school and one source of memories that span decades and bind generations.
