If your upcoming travel plans do not include a visit to the infield at Churchill Downs in Louisville for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby, then plan to come to Cornwall on Saturday afternoon, May 1st , for the eighth annual “Kentucky Derby Day Benefit” sponsored by the Porter Medical Center Auxiliary.  According to event chairperson Dee Hodges, the annual event is open to the general public and all are encouraged to participate in this unique and enjoyable benefit hosted by Sue and Bruce Byers.

Mint Juleps, Harrington spiral ham on biscuits, and other treats in keeping with the Derby theme will be featured at this outdoor event in Cornwall under a tent affording beautiful views to the Adirondacks.

As always , guests will be able to wager on their favorite horse—and then cheer on the winner during a live broadcast of the “Run for the Roses” at approximately 6:30 p.m.

According to Auxiliary President Nancy Rosenberg, this year, the Auxiliary has invited local businesses and individuals to participate as sponsors to assist the Auxiliary in covering the expenses associated with the event.  “We want to express a special thanks to our sponsors: The Chittenden Bank, the Porter Hospital Medical Staff, Green Mountain Beverage, Otter Creek Brewing, Holden Financial Services, Co-operative Insurance Companies of Vermont, Cabot Cheese, Doug and Peg Clifton, Chuck and Sue Burdick, Jim and Pame Daily and a very generous anonymous donor”, she said.

Proceeds from this event will be donated by the PMC Auxiliary to purchase a new patient exam table for the Partners in Palliative Care Practice and for a project to improve “Libby’s Trail”—the handicapped accessible nature trail adjacent to Helen Porter.

Tickets are $45 per person ($40 per person for Auxiliary members) and may be purchased by calling the Porter Hospital Public Relations Department at 388-4738.    Visa and MasterCard will be accepted.

The Porter Medical Center Auxiliary supports the work of Porter Hospital and Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center via donations for new equipment, programs and services.  The Derby Day event is only one of the projects that generate funds; additional funds are generated by the Round Robin Upscale Resale Shop and other special events.

The Auxiliary is governed by a board of approximately 20 volunteer women and men who oversee the projects and funds of the Auxiliary.
