Middlebury Actors Workshop, Addison County’s only small professional theater ensemble and a resident company of the Town Hall Theater, will present Allan Miller’s The Fox, based on the novella by D.H. Lawrence, March 18 – 21. The Fox kicks off MAW’s celebratory 10th year bringing intelligent, finely crafted theater to Central Vermont.

The Fox is set in rural England, 1918, at the end of WW1, where two women in an unconventional relationship are struggling to make a go of it on an isolated farm. They are having trouble with their crops and a fox is raiding their henhouse. Enter an engaging young soldier, fresh from the front, who appears to offer a temporary solution to their difficulties. The women invite him to stay on for a few days, a decision that proves to have devastating consequences.

In novels such as Lady Chatterly’s Lover, Lawrence is famous for exploring the charged erotic moments in which characters must decide to follow their minds or their loins. Allan Miller’s superb adaptation breathes fresh life into Lawrence’s fascinating portrayal of three individual lives intersecting in a quietly mounting tale of passion, betrayal and revenge.“There is so much in this play that is relevant for Vermonters--its rural setting, its exploration of nature, its independent and non-conformist female characters and its portrait of a young soldier profoundly damaged by war,” says MAW Artistic Director Melissa Lourie. “It’s also an incredible treat for actors, something they can really sink their teeth into!”

The Fox is directed by Lourie, and features actresses Karen Lefkoe of Middlebury, Katie Palmer of Ferrisburgh, and guest Equity actor Craig Maravich.

The Fox will be performed at Town Hall Theater, Middlebury, Thursday – Saturday, March 18 – 20 at 8 pm, and Sunday, March 21 at 2 pm. Tickets, $17, are available through the THT Box Office by calling 802 382-9222, online at www.townhalltheater.org, in person Monday – Saturday, noon – 5 pm, or at the door if available.
